Ladies, would you donate your cord blood?

I was talking to a doctor earlier about treatments and stem cells came into discussion. Apparently only 10,000 donations are made worldwide per year. I've never been pregnant so I'd never read about it before today, always assumed the cord/placenta was useless after birth.

The stem cells in cord blood can help treat cancers, immunodeficiencies, blood/marrow disorders and metabolic disorders. Seems like a miracle treatment.

I tried to get my cord blood for my kids stored for them. Apparently it could help if they were ever diagnosed with certain serious illnesses like leukaemia.

But the legal hurdles to allow the person who would collect the bloods into the high risk wars where my kids were delivered were virtually impossible so I gave up.

I don't think cord blood donations are routinely offered at many hospitals?

I've never been pregnant either but my approach to this stuff is if there's anything I don't need that can help someone else or help research, then they can have it. I donate blood and am on the organ and bone marrow registers so sure, why not.

I think there's controversy over private banking of stem cells. There's only a handful of hospitals in the UK that offer it, but I was surprised it was so low.

How did you hear about it?

It isn't something that was ever discussed with me but my last full term pregnancy was over 20 years ago. In fact the after birth and what happens to it was never discussed either. If this had been available then and there was no harm to me or my baby I would have considered it.

If the treatment was offered to everyone yes. Not for private companies to pick and choose or for profit

There's an NHS cord bank. Not all areas participate in the scheme though.

I was going to offer to do this with both my children, but I couldnt due to mine and my partners blood type, they had to send the cord to be tested to make sure babys blood hadnt got into my blood stream. really wish I could of, would of loved to help another ill person or baby

I would have if I had been asked...... I suppose they incinerate them which is a huge waste given the benefits...

Just been on the website to register and there's only 6 hospitals that can do this. Mine not been one of them. Still going to mention it to my.consultant xx

I was having my eldest daughter (22yrs ago now) when the pilot study for stem cell cord blood was initiated and I didn't need asking twice to donate. Mind you, it did help that I worked for the BTS and knew discussions were taking place even before I fell preggers!
