I vaguely remember something about the photos being hosted on a different server to aid uploading of the site etc...

Perhaps the server holding the photos is down, that's my guess.

If the avatars are hosted on the same server as the site itself, then they are not affected.

Don't forget the avatars are a smaller copies of the pics, and not the pics themselves.
