Reasons to stay alive

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

This a new book by Matt Haig. I haven't read it yet (it comes out on Diamondsmiles's and Superramfan's birthdays).

I caught the interview on R2 with Simon Mayo driving back from wheelchair training this evening and it sounds great.

What reasons do you have to stay alive?

I used to feel like that all the time (I keep living despite the near fatal and acts by my own hand). Now it's just sometimes.

It has come as a bit of a shock to me that I am going to be 50 next month, which is why I keep going on about it. I didn't ever expect to make it to 17, then 25, then 30, 44, and finally 47. Somehow, I'm almost 50.

Apart from my family my reason to stay alive right now is to wear all of my birthday dresses and really enjoy my Fab birthday party.

Lots of non sex things are mind-blowingly fantastic. Sometimes singing takes me to that place or just seeing something I've never seen before.

The 50 things are proving challenging: I have an achey arm just from wheelchair training without yet doing a full day!

The book is sort of aimed at those of us who don't see any reason to stay alive and would quite like to die. You chirpy chappies don't always make sense to us when we're unhappy.

You do dangerous things on fast bikes though, which must make it easier for you to not be alive.

I had a very lucky escape about 6 years ago. I was diagnosed with multiple pulmonary emboli (blood clots) and if I had proceeded with my planned surgery I most certainly would not be here today.

It made me realise how much I wanted to live because when you break it down all you really have is your life.

Partner has HD and thankfully isn't displaying any symptoms so for now, life is as good as we make it. She's already been let down by one partner and and I came from an unhappy relationship. We have plans involving travel, sunshine and laughter before it all goes shit flavoured. She's an amazing, beautiful woman who I adore and I couldn't imagine life without her.

My kids and my music.

And the fact that my continued existance is a constant source of frustration to the ex is an added bonus

When I was younger, I'd always think if I was going to end it, I may as well go steal some money or empty my bank account and go blow it on some amazing holiday first.

And then I probably wouldn't want to end it.

So that strange logic always used to stop me.

These days it's the kids and my husband. We all need each other.

So sorry to everyone on this thread who's posted about sad times in their lives. Big hugs to you all.

Loads...everyday you wake up its a new adventure...you create and live the day like a dream.

If you chose to focus on life's dreary problems accumulating then you're missing the gift.

And nature and the wilds are the perfect place to disappear into and realise there's a lot of crap not thinking about.

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

Gosh! This thread was raised from the dead and lives again.

I read the book and it has some useful bits to it.

My reasons haven't really changed in the last 45 weeks.

little house on the praire

I learnt what it's like to live, and even the ordinary non eventful days are a p!measure. Spending as little time in bed as possible as I just want to be awake. Also knowing I'm needed and !loved. Judging by my last post on this thread this change has been going on awhile now.

I have been suicidal at times and my kids are the reason I haven't gone through with it. Now I'm on the up I can see that there are hundreds of other reasons to stick around, but if I hadn't been a mum I wouldn't be here now to realise that.

I've been there too....life is so precious especially when it's threatened. Enjoy the times with your children you are so fortunate to have them ...take care x
