Given all those disclaimers on profiles about the reluctance of people to be the target of university research, I always presumed that swinging was therefore under-researched. Turns out not to be the case at all, although much of it is on US swinging culture in the 70s and 80s.

Here's a short literature review for info (titles can be googled although a lot of the articles are behind paywalls):

'Group Sex - A Scientists Eyewitness Report on the American Way of Swinging' (Bartell, Gilbert & Ann 1971 - 3 year study of 350 swingers)

'Swinging in Wedlock' (Palson, Charles & Rebecca 1972 - in which the researchers spend 18 months 'participating' as swingers)

'Swinging: A study of Decision Making in Marriage' (Henshel, Anne-Marie 1973 - study interviewed 25 swinging wives from Toronto)

'Swinging in America: Love, sex, and marriage in the 21st century' (Bergstrand / Sinski 2010 - book, looking at social norms).

And there's lots more!

Less academic books include:

'Swinging for Beginners: An Introduction to the Lifestyle' (Bellemeade, Kaye 2008)

'Recreational Sex: An Insider's Guide to the Swinging Lifestyle' (Thomas, Patti 1997)

Be good to find some more recent UK-focused research. I'll have a look around....

Just found some recent UK research entitled:

'Discursive constructions of UK swingers' self-identities and practices in a culturally gendered mono normative context'

Based on 8 interviews with swingers recruited via websites. Has some interesting quotes in it.

lol - I like the earlier American research where, in one of the studies, the academics actually became swingers. I'm not sure how that would get past the ethics committee nowadays....

Don't ya just love the evidence base!

Found an equally interesting...i mean erm boring article from the Jounral of Human Sexuality on The Swinging Paradigm: An Evaluation of the Marital and Sexual Satisfaction of Swingers. Concludes '...swinging may have far- reaching implications in its ability to add a new dimension to marital satisfaction.'
