so the east coast rail service has just been privatised and is now owned by a joint venture made up by Virgin and Stagecoach. In the five years since 2009 when the government took it into public ownership after National Express pulled out it has netted the treasury £1 Billion. seems like privatisation is a mistake on the face of it and proof that in the 21st century nationalisation of services and amenities is effective.

Derbyshire

Why? 1 billion over 5 years for Treasury isn't as good as 3.3 billion over 8 surely?

And the new company will bring improved services etc etc...

"remains to be seen that doesn't it"

Certainly does!

Done badly, privatisations can be poor value, but done well, they have brought real benefits.

MAMOBA, miles and miles of bugger all (Aberdeenshire)

Every time I have traveled east coast I've ended up getting compensation for delays... hardly a great advert for nationalisation.

I'd much rather it was run well - and honestly, I'm not fussed who does that - just get an effective, efficient service that does what it says it will.

Putting the 'cum' in Eboracum

As long as I still get my cheap advance tickets and free wine in First Class it could be run by Brian down the road.

Personally not happy about it, especially as private companies seem desperate to put barriers up at York Station, but I'll at least give them a chance before getting miffed.

all the other main line services have had to pay out more in compensation than the east coast line so hardly a great advert for privatisation in that case
