One thing that's always fascinated me is the behaviour of heterosexual females on social networking sites (such as Facebook, for example).

I've noticed how a straight woman will compliment another straight woman's photo by saying "Oh my God, you're gorgeous!/stunning!/beautiful!", yet when a guy uploads a new photo, it either gets ignored or gets comments like "Vain!" or "Poser!". However, when the roles are reversed, men are more than willing to compliment a woman in her pictures.

So my question is why do women make a point of complimenting other women, but seldom do the same for men? Do they assume men have enormous egos and therefore refuse to compliment as some kind of statement? Is it because they look down on men? Or is it simply because they find men plain unattractive to look at?

Bash away.

Quick example - I uploaded a new picture recently, it got three likes. My sister uploaded a new picture recently, it got 75 likes.

This argument could also apply to Fab, I think.

Apart from the fact occasionally both genders mean the compliment or this insult....generally this!

Usually because you can compliment a woman and she takes it at that, just a nice compliment. You say something complimentary to a guy though and he, his girlfriend and the cat all think you fancy him and assume you want to jump his bones...much easier to just not bother sometimes.

Sometimes if a woman likes a mans pics, the man automatically thinks the woman fancies him.

not always the way of course, just a nice pic.

What interests me is that there may be a psychological element to it also. For example, women see most other women as self-conscious, therefore they compliment them to raise self-esteem, whereas women see most men as confident, therefore they don't bother.

I personally couldn't give a shit. If I knew someone with a massive ego, but was still attractive, I would still compliment them. If it's all about aesthetics, then ego should not be a factor.

do you think they are bi sexual or maybe they think if they compliment a man it means they fancy them. I compliment men if they are wearing nice clothes. it maybe true that women lie to other women because I have noticed they tell their friends they look nice when they don't look all that good to me. my hubby said its just good manners, I say its lying.

I notice women saying "I compliment both sexes", but is it equal? Or do you call women 'gorgeous' and men 'nice'? I sense restraint when it comes to complimenting men.

I opened the door to the electrician last week. First thing I said was.. You're a really good looking boy. He stood with a goldfish look then smiled.

Compliments in the real world are far and few in this day and age so most people think there's a hidden agenda

"Because there's different social rules for women vs men."

This^^

Women are ornaments and decorations for people to look at, we've been brought up to be pretty, caring, and stay in our place.

Men are providers, givers, and slaves to employment (being used).

The lines are blurring though, one day men will be pretty too and love being patronised, and women will enjoy their place in being used. Has happpened already for plenty of people i'm sure.

facebook also has some value as a time management tool.

in the past i have invested a great deal of time in getting to know people only to discover their natural aptitude for being a c**t, now i can save time by visiting their facebook page.

This may be a valid point. Most of my mates are male. I will take the piss out of them mercilessly when the occasional warrants and vice versa but (and I have only really paid attention to it as a result of this thread) they are invariably complimentary on social media pic comments and only take the piss when we're face to face but will comment horrendously on each other all over Farcebook. None of them are ever rude about each other's girlfriends, wives and kids though. Hmm. You have me pondering now.

(I like a good ponder. Cheers!)

I won't compliment anyone if I don't mean it, male or female.

I also only have people I actually know on FB so I don't expect that any of them would take a compliment in anything other than the way it's intended.

I'll never understand why people have a billion friends 99% of those they haven't met, are never likely to meet and probably never even converse with them.

That may well have something to do with it.

But I feel more than likely it's because we are blokes and thats about it.

There was some research results out last year I think about how 'likes' to affect people, again, the majority who said 'yes, it is important to them' were females.

I am like some other posters in that most of my friend are male and I take the piss all the time. I do not stroke bleating egos at all but I am more likely to compliment a male pic I think. I only comment on female friends pics if they are exceptional but have no problem saying so then. I will never 'flatter to deceive', I despise it.
