When someone winks I always thought that it meant they were interested, so why, when someone winks and you send them a polite message of thanks and an invite to chat further do some people ignore it?

If they change their mind or sent a wink by mistake surely a simple message saying so is not asking too much - or is it?

It sometimes seems as if courtesy has gone to the same part of Room 101 that common sense went into many years ago never to be seen again.
