After watching the brits tonight, i'm amazed at the total lack of musicians with attitude. Where are the new Jam, or the new Smiths or even the new Oasis? Instead we get safe music like sam smith, Ed sherin and that Erza geezer.

Its a pat on the back awards for the best selling and marketed music.

They aren't interested in anything else but sales

It doesn't take into account all the great new and less popular bands who's songs never ever get covered on x factor

All that matters is making money and collecting awards.

Genuine question, but are there any "protest singers" around today, or in the last 30 years, such as Dylan, Lennon, Neil Young (Ohio)?

Only rap/hip-hop bands like Public Enemy and NWA.

If you give the public bland, they get used to it. The pop stuff like one direction have always been around selling millions, and the pop stuff will always sell, but there seems to be a lack of mainstream artists taking risks like the likes of the Jam, Smiths, and the Pet shop boys to an extent used to, writing about difficult and new subjects. All it seems to be now, is writing your album about your breakup with your ex girlfriend/boyfriend.

Is one to assume that all the female music artistes are fluffy bunnies or can they only write songs/release records three weeks out of every four?

I'm afraid opinion of what is an angry Young man in a band differs widely from my idea though Serg Tankian through mention of SOAD is getting close if we really want to get angry place on the slipknot or Marilyn Mansun tracks and we are definitely there!! The only thing you get from the Smiths is a state of depression!!

There's always great music around, both edgy and safe. You just have to hunt the edgy stuff down a bit. Due to illegal downloads, the industry acts a lot more cautiously than it used to. This results in safer signings with artists who will have wide appeal. Record companies aren't as necessary as they used to be though which means there's lots of darker stuff available to buy, but it doesn't have the financial clout behind it to get properly promoted. Try browsing sites like, Soundcloud and you may well stumble across new, exciting artists that you never new existed. Happy hunting.

Its not really fair to suggest there is no modern equivalent to the jam/smiths or any such 'angry young men' using Sam Smith or Ed Sheeran. You're nor comparing like with like.

It's like suggesting there is no modern equivalent to Albert Einstein using Joey Essex as an example.

There is good, credible, innovative music being created and released. You just need to look beyond x factor/the Brits/radio 1 to find it.

Looking at the Brits as a reflection of the music scene is a little like looking in a zoo and thinking that every animal that exists is represented.

It is a snapshot of of opinion led by the industry. Granted I have never heard of the majority of the "acts" in some of the categories, but then I'm more of a Kerrang kinda guy.

Royal Blood and Ed Sheeran were probably the least produced and most honest performances, without samples (well Ed technically sampled himself).

Until the kids stop voting in the X Factor, we will keep getting identikit artists.

Well done to Royal Blood for pissing on 1D's chips though!

Muse are about to release a new album by the way, i think it will be called Drones. Looking forward to the next tour!

"Oasis aren't dull?

That's the point the op is making, there are very few current groups/artists with any bite to their lyrics

But the point is made by subsequent posters that it is there you just got to find it as it isn't mainstream now!! And I think that Id prefer the angry attitude in the music not in the Gallagher style public rants!!

The angry young men you speak of usually attend awards ceremonies such as Kerrang or Q awards

As somoene said on tv today - angry young singer/songwriters who don't write their own songs- pathetic really

Just watching documentary about Joy Division- Ian Curtis-now that's deep and melancholy lol

Yeah me too thats the only performance I watched I liked the way that he got some underground artists to perform with him... It also leaves me wondering what direction is next album is gonna go in because all his six albums dont sound the same he experiments and hes good at it the guy is unpredictable....
