I've known a few women who literally paint on their face everyday! You can see the thick layers on the skin.

And they wonder why the men return them the next day? They say men lie, women lie all the time - you don't really look like that. Your eyelashes aren't that long. Your hair isn't that think. You ain't really that tall.

I spend around 100 - 200 pound a month on make up. I can't keep away from the MAC counter on payday. It takes a lot of make up To look natural for me. As without it I'm pretty horrific.

I'm another who rarely wears make up and I've been lucky enough to be complimented on my youthful appearance. I do however protect my skin from the sun and have all my life (white skinned Celt that burns easily) and look after my skin with good quality skincare and I think being vegetarian helps too.

I don't usually buy expensive makeup but I do fork out a bit more on skin care products (Spa Find, Elemis or Clarins) so I would say I'll probably easily hit that, after all, it works out about £300 pa over 50 years so yeah, maybe even £20k for me

I only wear makeup if I am going out for the night other than that it doesn't come anywhere near my skin as I am not one of these women who needs to plaster their face on before they can leave the house.clothes on the other hand I do spend quite a bit of money on and for me it's mainly a new car every year x

I have one small case of make up. Probably £20-30 worth. I do not buy or use any creams of any kind. All the moisturisers I have have been gifts.

I don't do:

Bronzer/fake tan

anti wrinkle cream (waste of money)

Exfoliater

firming cream

They are all complete nonsense mostly made from water (aqua often on the label).

I'd love to wear make up but never really learnt how to besides my skin was a mess when I was young and though improved with age I just don't have the money at the moment to experiment

America have banned the way creams are advertised as they cannot prove that they really are anti wrinkle etc

I love makeup though, I don't see it as a bad thing that I want to wear it. I love the process of it, how you can create a transformation and alter your appearance to suit your mood.

There's often an implied snobbery on these threads against people who choose to wear a lot of makeup, but I'm one of them and proud.

That sounds on the high side. Girls would probably start using some make-up around 15 and then probably carry on till 55. £15,000 comes to £30+ per month

i have so little and only wear it very occasionally - tinted foundation, shadow and mascara, lipstick and thats it - couple of minutes and im done - i do like nail polish - im told i have good skin for my age and i think its all down to basic moisturising - e 45 and nivea - simple girl here

I hardly wear makeup at all, feels fake on my face... Saying that I had a clear out of my makeup box before xmas and there were bits in there that must have been over 10 year old. Binned the lot and it cost me about 250 to replace. No doubt I will bun all that again in another 10 years time...

I've easily spent that amount and then some on products to date.

I really enjoy experimenting with make up creating different looks for day & night, just wish YouTube tutorials were around when I was younger, they're brilliant.

And for all those that say being make up free makes you look younger later on in life I would disagree. It's your skin type, care routine & a good helping of genetics which keep you looking younger.

I totally agree...make up doesn't age your skin. I've been wearing it since a teenager and I'm 35 and don't look 35. It's amazing what different looks you can come up with contouring is the in thing at the moment. I love make up

I don't think I've spent anything like that amount , plus nowadays , if you buy a really good brand - it can last a good while. Lipstick is my guilty pleasure. Actually , thinking about it , if we include manicures and pedicures maybe I may spend that in my lifetime - but my Nan still wears nail varnish and lippy at 88.

My make up bag is fairly basic though and just contains a few essentials. I don't have lots at any one time.

Foundations do protect skin from aging since nearly all of them have spf in them as do many moisturiser, they won't protect from the damage smoking does though.

This is true. Best beauty advice I was ever given was not to mess about too much with my eyebrows! Anything too far away from how they naturally grow and everyone starts to look odd.

I spend a lot of money to be told that I look beautiful naturally (when in reality I use a lot of Products) I'm super lucky that my best friend is a make up artist so I get her to buy all my MAC at discount. I estimate I spend over £200 a year on mascara and lashes alone.

But what suits one person doesn't necessarily suit all. For me I won't leave the house with a bare face.

The true way to grow old gracefully is to promote self confidence my nan taught me that. Shes 83 and looks and seems much younger gets mistaken for being in her 50's all the time, and as complex as her skin care regime gets is a bar of dove soap and water.

I like putting my make up on in the morning, foundation, blush, eyes, lips... I'm quite bold with My make up colours, I know I won't be able to wear plum lipstick when I'm 30 and doing a professional job! Love gothing up too.

I love mac and I've got a fair amount, love their matchmaster foundation, only one that matches my pale visage.

Easily spend over that in a lifetime!! I love Bare Minerals. Gives a soft glow rather than a cakey look. I used to wear Mac when I was younger, but I find the coverage too thick these days. Their pigments are really good though.

You and me both! Had my cosmetics and toiletries stolen from a hotel once (go fugure!

) - cost me well over £250 to replace everything! More due to sensitive skin than vanity though. Put 'for sensistive skin' on toiletries and cosmetics, and seemingly you can treble the price!!

Naomi Wolfe's The Beauty Myth is enlightening. Most 'beauty' products are a waste of money. Just advertising hype meant to part you from your cash.

A guy who used to work for me trained under Vidal Sassoon - the real guy, not the academy.

The stories of treatments, layers, colours, etc are eyewatering!

Those same women would then come in every 6-8wks for a "strip" treatment - basically chemically removing all of the treatments they'd paid to put on.

People forget that its dead skin - keratin - noting more - it doesn't matter what you do to it - all it can do is absorb whatever coating you apply to it.

Another guy I worked alongside was a chemist - working with polymers.

Soap - nothing more is necessary.

Shower gels, body washes, lotions, etc again do sod all except leave a coating on your skin. They have to or the lovely smells they have will be washed away when you rinse.

God knows how much an ugly one must spend.

That sounds on the high side. Girls would probably start using some make-up around 15 and then probably carry on till 55. £15,000 comes to £30+ per month

But what if you like and enjoy makeup, as in the actual artistry and craft of it? To me I'm not being hyped, conned or _educed into buying into any kind of beauty myth. It's what I like and enjoy, the same as any hobby.

As ive previously said i dont really wear make up myself but i do enjoy the artistry of doing it for my friends and family who do love wearing it. Maybe that stems from the fact im a childrens face painter for parties and events

I really enjoy experimenting with make up creating different looks for day & night, just wish YouTube tutorials were around when I was younger, they're brilliant.

And for all those that say being make up free makes you look younger later on in life I would disagree. It's your skin type, care routine & a good helping of genetics which keep you looking younger.

I've never been one to wear much makeup, when I was about 15 a bit to much, but I honestly don't think makeup suits me.

I wear natural looking when I do wear it but I like lippy. I've never worn it every day, but my mum doesn't and my sister has never worn makeup in her life not even on her wedding day.

Guess where just a non makeup family

I didn't think it was just make-up but creams, deodorants, razors/wax/hair removal cream, shampoo etc.

Some of those things men will use as well but overall women spend more.

I spend a fair amount on toiletries and I like to have paraben free body wash, shampoo and condition and I use those every day, sometimes twice a day. That lot probably comes to about £20 a month.

I buy five lipsticks at £20-£28 each a year, five mascaras at £18 each and eyeliner at about a fiver each time. Nivea cream for my face. Maybe some eyeshadow once a year. That's about it.

Exactly. I enjoy applying make up and enhancing different features.

I don't buy skin potions and anti aging creams. I'm lucky that I've generally got very good skin naturally.

as much as i love make up and looking nice, money doesnt grow on tree's and i cant justify the cost.

i know im not a minger and dont need it to look half decent. i do like mascara but again i wont spend loads n it.

I don't go for expensive make up as i don't think the over inflated prices are justified. I'm never going to look like a model so I use what I need to get me looking vaguely human and to enhance certain features. So I don't think I spend anywhere near as much as many do....But I think I look Ok most of the time

I only wear make up when I go out. My job doesn't allow it and I am happy with that. It makes me feel extra special.

If we are talking money and women in particular being asked if we get value for money, then why are sanitary products still subject to VAT and are still termed as a non essential item!

I was reading that a woman earning minimum wage must work 38 full days to pay for her life times supply.

My periods are not luxurious so why are we being taxed as if they were?

I am sorry if this meanders off subject. It makes me weepy/ angry and irrational

I have no problem with people who love to wear make up, use, gels, creams, lotions. If people like it and it makes them feel good why not?

What I do hate is being told I HAVE to use blah blah to save my skin, look 'better', 'younger', 'healthier'.

Any decent chemist will tell you that none of these crwams have any real effect on the skin. Some even attack the skin causing it to thicken.

I loathe the pressure put on women to use such products. The quote from Helena Rubenstien sickens me. I am far from lazy but if I don't have a rigid 'beauty regime' then I am somehow a slattern? I don't buy it.

People can use all the products they like. It's their money, their body, their choice. But don't believe the hype.
