Why am I so affected?!?

London

In my line of work I deal with sick people and a fair amount of them are elderly and I have the patience to handle situations. On my way home today an elderly lady was walking ahead of me and entered first into our building entrance, I ran up to hold the door for her and said "thank you", she proceeded to turn and look at me I smiled and she just kept staring at me. It got to an awkward silence and I thought she was wondering if I lived here, I was about to say " oh I live upstairs", but before I could she said "thank you?" And I looked at her confused and said thank you again. She continued to walk ahead and before she went through her door said "You have no manners!"

I was firstly shocked then got a little mad and when I got to my flat I was a little tearful.

I don't understand why that affected me so much..

I bet she didn't hear your first thank you since it was before she turned. But you know you said it so don't fret (easier said than done, I totally get why you're affected; I hate it when people get the wrong end of the stick about me or something I've said/done and it's so frustrating when you know that trying to put it right will only make things worse).

I'm thinking she may not have heard me say thank you the first time

maybe she was taking the 'thank you' you spoke as a she should be saying it as you were the one holding open the door - like you tell a child - now what do you say --- just a thought

I think this was the case

But even if she was deaf surely she'd have realised that the OP was holding the door for her?

OP I wouldn't take it to heart.

I wouldn't dwell on it. Elderly people don't always know what's going on or mean what they are saying. As others said she may not have heard you or could be a little confused

Yeah I totally feel the same way. I thought I was being respetful already. Apparently it's not enough for some. Ah I guess we just have to be more patient with the elderly.

Maybe she misunderstood, thought you were barging past, and she was opening the door for 'you'?

she might not have appreciated having the door held open for her and thought you was treating her like she's not capable?

don't be sad about it, you was just being kind and aren't gonna know what's going on in her head unless she tells you.

Maybe she is a little senile or has dementia I'm sure she didn't mean it

She's probably dead as a post love which is why she was staring at you, she was probably looking to lip read your thank you but you had already said it when she wasn't looking. Take her a little box of chocolates and get to know her, she'll soon change her tune and you'll probably get to the bottom of what happened x

North of The Wall - youll need your vest

Unless she tries to ram you with a shopping trolley next time you see her in Tesco I think its probably just a misunderstanding and I wouldnt worry about it

My thought too if I interpreted the OP correctly.

Plus, if someone is a miserable cunt, age just makes them an old miserable cunt.

If you're still affected, drop a note through her door with a little explanation. You're not at fault, but it might help you to put it out of your mind. I work with the sick and elderly too - some of them are miserable gits, just like you find in every other age group

Yes, if I hold open a door for someone and they don't acknowledge the courtesy I'll say "Thank you" in a sarcastic tone.
