Ted Talks and Porn

We love watching Ted Talks, most of them are pretty fascinating. Well this morning we watched one called 'why I gave up watching porn', followed by one about the great porn experiment.

Both are incredibly interesting, and it seems that when researching the effect of watching porn, they struggle as they dont have a control group of guys that have never watched porn, as most lads start looking from age 10. However recent studies have been about guys who have given up watching porn, and it has shown that it has actually resulted in a number of unexpected benefits that include curing erectile dysfunction, curing depression, curing social anxiety, better ability to connect with partners/dates, increased confidence, increase in energy focus and concentration.

So D and I got chatting, I dont watch porn...as I prefer naughty stories/books, but D, I imagine like most blokes, has a little 'me' time and watches porn. After watching the talks, he's decided to not watch porn for a couple of months and fire up his imagination instead, and we'll see if he or I notice a difference!

Im curious to know if anyone else has done this? Did you notice a difference?

Interesting concept, I've not watched porn for a few weeks now and on the strength of this I might just stay away and see if it makes a difference long term

I think porn does have a lot to answer for. Things seen in porn that are probably a bit extreme become expected in a relationship especially if watched from a young age. It also dulls your imagination and you can become reliant on it I think. I also know of a couple of domestic murders where the murderer, one of which was a teenager has got his ideas from watching violent porn. I'm not against it, I watch it all the time but it shouldn't be so readily available online. That's my two penneth worth anyway.

I'm a huge fan of the TED talks and can easily idle a day away watching them. Haven't seen this one yet so will keep an eye out.

Porn does seemed to have influenced many people and not for the better. The imagination is so much better, but often under used.

I won't take a moral stance against porn not unless it's looking at the morality of governments that allow it as an opium.

It does change attitudes entirely. You only have to look at most pictures on here. Most are women. Some dressed like cheap meat. Some being used aggressively. Try and convince a porn raised generation that sex is great WITHOUT the violent degradation.

I'll always have a problem with this topic as it only addresses a specific type of porn - hetero porn made by men for men. Not made for women. Not made for lesbians or gay men. There is a majority of misogynistic porn and saying giving up porn is better when you've never watched say, couples porn (like me and my fella are making) where is is an intimate and enjoyable experience for everyone is just wrong. Our stuff won't give you depression, erectile dysfunction or stop you from connecting with someone else, and it's a shame that so much great porn gets lumped in with the sexist stuff. Porn can be a great eeducational tool, it can give you new ideas and it is something both partners can explore to increase sexual satisfaction if both parties are vonfident confiding in each other.

Just out of curiosity, if your partner is giving up the videos, will you be giving up the literature, or do you view them as totally different and incomparable?

Interestingly, Mr J lost interest in porn when we took up swinging. Porn is pointless compered to real live sexy people.

"I'll always have a problem with this topic..."

I completely agree with your points, there is some great educational/sensual stuff out there. They were talking about all porn though, regardless of type...he talked about our 'click culture', where we get a dopamine hit every time we view a new person or new situation and it leads to fast forwarding/multiple tabs/switching videos often...so regardless of what porn is floating your boat, the science looks at the behaviour of watching porn...not what the porn is necessarily.

Like most studies though there will be exceptions

and no we didnt discuss me giving up my reading habits lol

Ok so I'm assuming lots of people are as sex-obesses as me as in the topic not just the act. I wonder - would they find the same things from literature - like skim-reading 50 shades trilogy? And what effect would watching porn with a partner rather than on your own? If me and N watch porn together we don't do the multiple tabs or fast-forwarding, and we interact with each other too. Does watching porn on your own, assuming you should feel guilty and preventing people finding out contribute to the negative psychological developments? I even wonder if something similar happens with a cute-kittens video binge? I always want these studies to include random stuff lol x

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

The acts of reading and watching engage different parts of the brain. The visual stimulus can detract from the imagination, the act of clicking through and moving quickly between images creates an overload of the senses.

Reading is more deliberative and the brain has to conjure the images.

TED is a great resource and I enjoy going along to them as well as watching them online.

One of the first things he gives as an example was that his missis was watching something like the voice or x factor...he watched it with her for 20 minutes, then went to get a shower. He has never wanted or aspired to be a singer or musician but found himself daydreaming for 10 minutes about what his song choice would be if he went on the show. If watching something for 20 minutes can have that much impact on your imagination, then what impact does watching porn say twice a week have on your imagination if youve been watching porn regularly from a teen? Its an interesting thought!

A valid point...the studies they mention didnt include any that looked at couples watching porn together, only from a guy on his own point of view...so definitely agree there are psychological differences

I make porn but rarely watch it unless like a coupe of years ago i had to sit through 11 films to pick R18 film of the years for the awards.

I make normal suck n fuck stuff with normal couples/guys/girls & the avoid extreme stuff that new studio's make to get noticed.

I shoot normal average people not porn stars, people especially women like it. Six packs & barbie dolls don't make good porn because most people watching have bits they don't like/stretch marks etc & are put off as they can't relate or match up to perfect people porn.

I don't watch enough porn to know if it does me any harm lol.

The trend for neck play/ throttling does nothing for me in the films.

On the study, were the 'benefits' as a result from not wanking or not watching porn?

Nor me. I'd much rather see real people in the flesh.

I love the Ted talks too.

I think porn has been beneficial overall, opening many minds to more possibilities and sexual activities. It has normalized some stuff, including less affection in sex, making it more mechanical for some.

I think it probably only adds a little if at all to body dismorphia, which is something I detest about our society.

If someone had ED then a long look at their lifestyle including porn and wanking would be helpful.

I would be interested to know which is the most watched porn by straight men. I watch porn quite regularly,I like to watch men kissing and sensual love making-even anal can be sensual. There are websites that teach tantric sex and sensual techniques. They are interesting to watch with voice overs as instructions

As a result of not watching porn, the guys in the study still wanked...just stopped using porn as a stimulus.

Usually what i'm having for dinner, have i got the lighting / angles right, what's on TV that night...anything but think about whats happening in front of me.

Sounds cold but you disassociate yourself from the sex & think of it as a job, thats why i can't go from filming to fucking straight off as you have to get yourself into another frame of mind.

Also another reason why i like to swing as i can leave the bloody camera's at home lol.
