Black box for monitoring your driving style

As part of a special promotion scheme by Ford I had a black box installed in the car for a week to monitor my driving style . I found it very useful as it analyses gear changes and any harsh breaking ..The only problem is you only receive the results about a week after the box is removed . By that time I could not remember why I had reason to break hard . I always try to anticipate events ahead of me and use my brakes as little as possible . I will need to try harder as my driving style was in the third quartile as opposed to the top which is four . I would like to have a black box permanently installed and to analyse the results once a week. Constant feedback is always useful.

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

Telemetric boxes for insurance may well become more of a norm as we move forward.

When I passed my test, I considered getting one. But quickly realised they were just a way of trying to hike up insurance prices for new, inexperienced drivers.

I think if they were used in the way of the OP, they would be a lot more useful, but they aren't, they are just used to push up your premium, because you broke the speed limit to overtake a dangerous driver (something you are legally entitled to do).

I'd hate one but now use my car on predictive cruise control a lot, which does braking etc for you, based on the cars around you.

We will have fully automated driving in 10-15 years, so will avoid black boxes till then. I will stick with my totally biased feedback about my driving till then.

I know that I'm a fantastic driver... so I'd love a device whish would confirm this to me on a regular basis.

" Constant feedback is always useful. "

Please could someone delete that comment before Mrs ddc sees it.

I am forever arguing with our Škoda's helpful driving tips.

'You should really be in 6th gear."

"Really? Have you forgotten Slack Hill is around the next bend?"

Sure enough, within seconds she's panting "Please, 4th, no, 3rd, omg give me 2nd NOW!"

A black box, coupled with the sort of predictive technology now available in some cars, along with an element of learning capability, could be useful.

Just don't give them guns

some new ford cars have a similar system build in as standard so you can check your driving score. mainly green driving info.

Where I go in my car is my business - nobody elses and therefore I would not have one fitted
