Why do newspapers use the term tragic accident for stupidity?

For instance, if someone is dancing in the fast lane of the M1 and a truck kills them, it's not an accident, it's stupidity.

Totally agree. Same applies when some youth comes off the road whilst going too fast and wraps themselves round a tree.

Aye, don't get me wrong, losing someone is tragic. Hence why I have not posted the article that made me think of this. It wouldn't be fair on their relatives.

They could call it self inflicted incident , I guess

I think I know the accident you are talking about it's hardly self inflicted I'm sure they didn't do what they did and the sole purpose was to die that would be called suicide.

for whom and of what benefit..

the person doing said act is dead, most people i hope realise that being on a live motorway is hazardous to ones health..

the surviving family etc know what happened, why does everyone else need to..

I think my main issue with "tragic accident", is the word "accident".

To me, a tragic accident would be if the truck driver swerved out of the way, drove into a car and killed the driver.

Newspapers are not known for accurate reporting. Have you seen the headline of today's Daily Mail?

I get what you're saying but when there are families and loved ones involved I think it's ok to report it like this.

Tragic circumstances is generally reserved for suicide.

Isn't an accident tragic by its very nature if it ends in death?

" am sure the family see it as a tragedy even if the OP doesn't"

Let me reiterate what I'm trying to say.

Loss of life - tragic.

If someone was dancing on the motorway, whilst it was closed and a truck came. - accident

If someone was dancing on the motorway with cars doing 70 mph - not an accident.

Why do newspapers use the term tragic accident for stupidity?

For instance, if someone is dancing in the fast lane of the M1 and a truck kills them, it's not an accident, it's stupidity.

It's tragic that anyone would be so stupid - with no regard for the driver and their own an other people's safety . And it wasn't really an accident as the end result was exactly as one would have expected .

So it could be construed as an inaccurate headline .

The fact is that those family members who are suffering enough as it is will not want read about irresponsible stupidity at this moment in time will they ?

They haven't done anything to deserve that .

Today a young man on acid … thought he could fly … jumped out of a building … what a tragedy! What a dick. He's an idiot. If he thought he could fly, why didn't he take off from the ground first? Check it out? You don't see geese lined up to catch elevators to fly south, they fly from the fucking ground. He's an idiot. He's dead. Good! We lost a moron? Fucking celebrate. There's one less moron in the world

Do you know how they determine accident or suicide, say for instance someone was hit by a train and their heart is recovered, if it's suicide and they waited for that train, blood vessels would be enlarged as if to show adrenaline, anticipation if you like. An accident where the person was accidently hit by the train, the heart shows that they were calm and unaware.

Would someone trapped in a burning building be determined as suicide then?

Just because someone may be stupid/reckless/call it what you will, doesn't mean it is not an accident.

They may have significantly increased the probability of an accident, but it would be still an accident....unless it was on purpose.

Putting yourself inside a burning building isn't normally a method of suicide. I'm only familiar with it because my hometown of bridgend had a lot of suicides, so much so that they stopped putting it on the news, mainly hangings but some chose train tracks or jumping off southerndown cliffs. My mothers friend wouldn't believe that her 15 year old son would take his own life on a train track and was convinced it was an accident. That's the only reason why I know about the heart business.

My point is someone trapped in a burning building would know their death was imminent and so their heart would more than likely exhibit the signs you say indicate suicide.

Someone who decided to overdose on sleeping pills or slit their wrists in the bath would drift into unconsciousness before dying so their heart wouldn't show the signs you say indicate suicide.
