I'm pretty sure that it was one an unwritten law, that you went to the chippy every Friday tea time.

Anyone still do this or has it fallen out of fashion?

We do it on occasion. It was always a tradition in our house when I were a lad. And I wonder why I need to shift timber now

little house on the praire

Think it was because a lot of people didn't eat meat on Fridays. We always had fish but not necessarily from the chip shop.

It used to be a "cheap" tea at the end of the week as well

Last time jay had fish and chips from the chip shop it was nearly £6

On occasion here too. There's a very traditional chippy not too far from us and the freshness of their fish is something you can't go too long without. Good, naughty times.

well I'm thinking about it now - thanks for that!

also reminds me, there's a great song called 'chippy tea' by The Lancashire Hotpots - chorus has a line something "I don't want lobster thermidor with a raspberry coulis, I'm a northen working man and I want a chippy tea"

with a can of Vimto please

It goes back to the Catholic religion when you couldn't eat meat on a Friday.

"Was it not a Jewish thing aswell?"
not as far as I'm aware, Jews are not supposed to work on the sabbath (sundown on Friday) which if adhered to strictly includes cooking. For that reason they may well have popped down the chippy

fish and chips in a newspaper, pickled egg and a gerkin, vinegar ,pinch of salt, lovely, normally about twice a month, and yes,on a friday,as that heralds the end of the week

Something to do with fish being brain food aswell?
