So over a year ago, according to the search on here, I said I was going to ditch windows for Linux, it went well, I was back on Windows within a day

Going to give it another shot and use Ubuntu, anyone got any tips or useful websites?

Ubuntu is about the best one. Try setting up a dual operating system until you're used to using linux.

I remember haveing a asus pc with a built in anti virus the only browser on it was A lower edition of firefox which you could not update it was trapped on yer system tried as i could could not update Then the anti virus started to fail you could literally see the top on the pc Going Up and down with virus,s no help from windows obviously, it was early days then my first pc reasonably cheap 2008 circa:- decided to get sledge hammer out I felt sad at first but with all the hours wasted and grief over 12 mnths or more it was a relief to get rid, have windows now thou a slow system have everything in place to function right for me haveing just got Rid of norton and what a difference in Performance..

You gave it a day? you can spend more that setting it up, nix can be a amazing OS but you need to give it time to fully understand how to work it and it's not a OS for anyone that just wants to use their computer for everyday use, as Moany said Ubuntu is a good one for beginners.

Yes I totally agree with linex not being a OS for anyone for Everyday use more if your pc geek Orientated or on them lines, personally the best one,s if you like pc,s.

I installed Ubuntu over christmas as a dual boot win7 Ubuntu system. All worked fine, easy to do, and I've not looked back. I benefitted from watching some excellent videos on how to do it on youtube. Once installed I setup some customisation and then took it away with me overseas for 10 days on a test run. All worked ok. The only wobble has been getting a Linux version of junks pulse for vpn access to a corporate network. Good luck and have fun exploring.

hope you wet to the Norton site & used the Norton total removal tool if you don't use this it leaves part of it hidden in windows which will slow the computer down when you load any other anti-virus program

Currently use Elementary OS. Which is based on Ubuntu. It feels a lot cleaner IMO.

I'd suggest that you try a boot-up CD/DVD version of Linux - one of the 'distro' versions that is simple to use, as similar to windows as possible etc. This way you haven't ditched Windows (assuming you use this and not apple), can try it for as short a time as possible, have invested nothing financially and can use windows whenever you like.

You'd research for and find the version of linux that seems right and then download it. You'd then boot up your pc from the disk, which may mean that you'd need to change the boot order in your pc settings, to have boot from disk as the first option. The disk doesn't install itself on your pc, merely loads the linux programme.

You'd insert the disk whenever you wanted to try out the linux system, instead of Windows.

If you're happy with it, you could configure your pc to have dual or multi-boot options. In other words, linux and multiple operating systems, including your windows OS, are all installed on your pc but are separated and each is optionally used, allowing you the choice to switch and use whichever you fancied.

You've already paid for windows, so keeping your installation of it intact is handy, preventing you maybe reinstalling it in future and possible authentication issues, where you'd need to prove to Windows that it's a genuine copy, purchased and used on the same pc that it had originally been registered to.

I'll let some of the others give you some ideas for the specific versions of Linux that may be good for you to use now.

i put linux mint 17.1 on a spare laptop i had...i really like it and will probably ween myself off windows completely at some point...

I would say for new users mint is a better disto to opt for over ubuntu.

I don't think I will ever move away from windows, used *nix for plenty of things but windows is better for every day use
