I'm watching this on Ch4 +1.

I didn't realise the level of tooth decay in children was as high as a third, and half in the North. I'm shocked.

I knew it was on the increase but seeing a young child having 12 baby teeth removed because of decay really is shocking.

The woman who thought it was more important to let her child watch peppa pig rather than brush her teeth was fucking ridiculous!! No wonder she had an abscess and had to have 8 teeth taken out!

Bloody disgusting its a simple process to brush your teeth and parents who dont or even encourage kids too are neglecting their health!

My nephews adore brushing their teeth so much so it became a fun game they liked to do

I know these programmes are made to be shocking but I am getting angry with that mother. Not being able to find a school uniform for a five year old. She's giving the child adult portions, sugary drinks and sweets all the time.

My son never had a sweet until he was 5 then one small packet on sweet day. A tiny bit of chocolate at Easter, caught my ex mother in law feeding in a milkybar when he was one I went crackers, what one year old needs sweets. My son is 24 and has one tiny filling, I'm 49 and had a filling since I was 14 had all mine between the ages of 12 and 14

I'm nearly 30 without a single filling. My parents weren't strict but they did make me finish my tea before treats and made me brush twice a day and it's paid off!

Made it to 30 before I had any fillings also.

Wasn't fed sweets untill I was old enough to go to the shops myself and ask for a half pence mixture lol

Having had fissure sealant treatment at the dentist at a young age stopped me having any fillings or extractions a lot younger than 30 I reckon........cheers maw

So how do we change the stats on things that are preventable, like tooth decay? What is it that happens in the north, where there are fewer people than the south, that makes their teeth worse?

I understand about deprivation, reduced health outcomes and unemployment but I really find it hard to understand why anyone would let their children have pain in their mouths for the want of teaching them to brush their teeth.

It's sad.

Watched it and felt so sorry for the little girl. And angry at the mother. All convenience food??!! I'm no Jamie Oliver but come on, making your own dinner is cheaper, and not that difficult.

That pyjamas she had on (mother said she wore 8-9 so assuming it's that) looked welded on to her.

She's 4/5 if I remember correctly??

And the sight of her waking up in agony after the extractions?? Cruelty.

Although the programme on after that was nearly more depressing

The fissure sealant is brilliant at preventing fillings. From what I've seen though, this is only offered privately and not by NHS dentists. It's a shame it's not widely available.

Education is the key. I've seen young children having ribena from a baby bottle - one of the worst things for rotting teeth!

I found it strange when my dentist said well done to me for looking after my 5 year olds teeth so well at his last check up. After reading this maybe it's not so strange that he said it.

I'm going to watch this on catch up today at some point.

I ate sweets quite often as a kid, but my parents were religious about making me clean my teeth properly. Twice a day for 2 minutes a day, flossing from a young age. I was 31 before I had my first filling.

In this case the statistics show the situation is worse in the North.

It's not down to anyone's opinion, that's what the dentists actually see.

They say 1/3 in the South and 1/2 in the North because those are the numbers.

The thing that made me angry was the mother of the four year old saying she can't deny her anything as SHE wants an easy life.

The child chose and ate sushi walking around the supermarket and was then fed chocolate.

I hope from being involved in the programme, and after her daughter having a general anaesthetic to remove 8 teeth, she will see she has been denying her child her health.

Had my fissure sealant in the late 80's and sure it was free(probably not for everyone)

What im frustrated with as a mother is that products specifically targeted for childrens consumption are crammed with sugar and salt..

Heinz baby juice.. its essentially neat apple juice. FRUCTOSE is still sugar no matter how fancy words are..

I do look at labels on things and am more aware. Brushing teeth after fruit juice drinks is very bad as those sugars weaken the enamel

Dont agree with this...imo this a little "extemist" i ate sweets as a child not ott not holding off til i was of age...just like a normal kid...had my first filling lasy yr at 29...my kids never had a tooth problem and i let my kids have sweats/treats they earn off their reward chart

It's the fact that people give small children NEAT fruit juice in a bottle is where the rot starts to set in.

I saw a programme many years ago about portion sizes. One of the striking things was that 25 years and more ago a very small glass of orange juice would probably be the only juice. The amount of orange juice a child would have now is double the size of what they used to get.
