little house on the praire

We where talking about this yesterday and the Easter thread reminded me.

When I was a kid I would go mushrooming with my grandad knew exactly where they where in each field and some where as big as dinner plates.

Which fields had which wild flowers in like ladysmock and I knew a place up the Spinny where white, pink and bluebells all grew together.

I loved being in the country but knew know different.

Saw my first lambs yesterday which made me think about it

Oh yes and on Easter Sunday we would go for a walk and look in the side of the ditches to see who was the first to spot wild violets

I too was having this conversation yesterday. When I was younger I would go off with friends building dens, tree houses, playing football, manor, cops and robbers etc...as well as making up our own.

These days you hardly see kids doing this. All they want to do is be on their phones or consoles.

It's like they have lost the imagination to be creative and have fun outdoors.

I've been laughed at for this before (hey, that's not a problem, I see myself naked and I laugh)...but we used to put a tennis ball into the foot of a stocking and wang it against the wall side to side and up and down...the summer days simply flew by in in Arse End

I used to do that too! Used to get bollocked by my mum for ruining tights.

Climbing trees and staying up them for hours!

Anyone used to have Conker fights?

Used to love going out with my dad, picking the conkers, soaking them in vinegar, nail varnish etc, putting a shoe lace through them and going to war with my friends!

Used to be gutted when I had a champion and it broke to an inferior conker!

Was there any other colour that Mam's wore in the 70's?

I now buy "natural" holdups to wear with lighter coloured lingerie, but deep down, I know it's American Tan

in Lancashire

stood very stil when the local bobbie caught us being scallywags

usually a good telling off was enough, occasionally a clout on the ear and then when he saw our Dad in the local we would get it worse..

happy days..

Building damns on the stream so high that we could dive and swim in the water.

Play out from early morning until dusk

Play games like kerby, hopscotch etc...

Make dens in the woods and spend the day there without supervision and never have to be concerned about 'stranger danger'.

The main thing I remember as a kid is buggering off on my bike with my mates in the summer after breakfast and as long as I was home for tea, my parents didn't have a problem....they had no clue where the fuck I was ( I might have said we were going down the Sea Wall, but we could have changed our minds and gone elsewhere)...no way of getting in touch, just trusted to get home before my curfew...I know there were weirdos and paedos around in those days but it was much more of an innocent time...I don't have kids but I still kinda miss that innocence (and I didn't turn out too bad...honest)

Climbing trees

Playing knock and run

Stealing apples from an orchard

Swimming in river and building a 'camp' fire to help us dry out

Rowing a bath tub round a flooded field - think had been left there as trough for horses but when field flooded someone had blocked up the plughole and it became our boat

For some strange reason that reminds me of going round my mate's house, age 12 or so, getting her Dad's wheelbarrow out and bodding round the estate pretending it was the Popemobile and the one in the wheelbarrow was being shot...what can I say, we took our entertainment in Arse End where we could

Played outside from, morning till night, without a care in the world! Bike rides, managed to somehow get three of you on a bike!

I had a carrier on my bike took my pet mouse everywhere!

Climbed trees, built dens, picked at the bubbling tar,in the road when it melted in the heat! I'm sure summers, where longer and hotter, back then. Perhaps it just felt that way.

Poked about in the local pond for hours, looking for newts. Oh the innocence of childhood! And now look at you dirty lot!

Mushrooms, frog spawn, going up a tree next to the fish farm with a rod and line, raiding apple orchards. . All parts of being young then. How times have changed.

I was the tree climber. It was my responsibility to get up there and tie the rope to the thick overhanging branch across the river. Used to swing (swing??!!!) out and back, with an extra one 'boarding' on each return, until it snapped an we all got soaked! Jeeez 45 years ago!
