I can understand why it can be so detrimental to health, some elderly people don't see anyone for days on end, where is the motivation to do anything or to take care of yourself if you're lonely and isolated?

like a smoker I do find dealing with loneliness can occasionally leave me struggling to catch my breath....

... but it only usually lasts a few minutes.

On the plus side, I do have a much firmer handshake these days....

I've never been lonely but have seen people that are, its a dreadful thing.

I'm often alone but never lonely.

In fact I think its much easier living in a small town

Loneliness can wreck people if they don't learn to appreciate the freedom they have on their own. True story!

I quite like my own space sometimes. As a only child I got used to it. But sometimes do crave attention that I dont receive at home, that can make me feel lonely.

Yes, but they're crap at Scrabble - they only know two words and they can't spell those properly.

Loneliest time in my life was the last few years of my marriage

I love my own company (I'm fucking awesome, what's not to love?)...I seriously do not see myself as ever having another relationship and have no fear at the thought of being on my own the rest of my life, although I do hope to pop my clogs in a public place rather than at home alone and the cats eat me

I love my alone time, I prefer being alone more than I prefer to be with people.

I think being lonely and feeling it will change from person to person and their personality types.

Where I would be more than happy to be totally isolated from people, most people I know couldn't even bare the thought of it.

I am completely the polar opposite to my brother, he needs to be surrounded by people all the time, he hates being alone.

We're all different!

Loneliness is truly horrible - I was made redundant last year - instead of moaning about my lot - I decided to go and visit old people and just sit and natter over a brew with them - they really enjoy it - as do I - and sometimes that's all it takes - a little time for others

I think lonelyness is a very underestimated health risk.

Just a simple chat or kind word whether trivial or brief can make all the difference.

No matter how tough or self motivated we think we are, we all feel lonely from time to time.

Dropping dead and no one noticing for days on end.

Central

I think our mental health and well being has been undersold for years. Loneliness is an aspect of that and, as social beings, it's healthy for us to have the companionship, support and warmth as readily and plentifully as possible.

We all have preferences for how much time we like to spend with others. Many of us on Fab, myself included, love living alone. We may miss some company from time to time, but I'd hope that not too many of us suffer loneliness to a great degree. My dad died just over a year ago and I did feel some loneliness, whilst I was grieving. It's a pernicious feeling and some people compound this, feeling some shame, guilt etc, because perhaps they're not that sociable, like those idealised people that society often projects.

I aim to take care in my dealings with others. We don't know what they're feeling, what they've been going through, the invisible hell we're ignorant to.

Compassion is something free that we can share with others. A little can go a long way. We may help prevent someone's early death, depriving children of parents, or our partners.
