Hi folks hope everyones ok

Having driven manual cars all my life i thought driving a auto would be boring, but having had the x5 with a auto box for nearly a year i wouldnt go back.

Whats your thoughts?

I like manuals for a fast getaway at lights but with the stop/start stuff of new cars I wonder if it makes any difference now.

Flappy paddle gear boxes give you the control found in a standard gear box -- a stick shift -- without the necessity of a manual clutch. An automatic transmission shifts on its own accord once the engine RPMs reach a certain speed; you having no control of the process. With a flappy paddle gear box, you shift from one gear to the next, but with your thumb. The clutch is actuated by electronics when you depress the gear button or switch. While a flappy paddle gear box is not as simple to use as an automatic transmission, it is hardly more difficult and gives you considerably more control.

I'm not a fan of automatics, I like the feeling of driving a manual better. However I had the privilege of driving round Silverstone in a Ferrari, with a flappy paddle semi-automatic gearbox, and it was awesome!

Flappy paddle gearboxes are sequential gearboxes like motorcycle gearboxes.

The ratios are often closer together than the traditional gated gearbox, giving better control.

I'm exactly the same mate. Although I got a mondeo (sorry everyone but I'm a dad first

lol) where I live Theres a lot of clutch action and after a long day it makes it so much easier driving home.

No it's just the simplicity of pushing forward for up or pulling back for down, it's just a quicker method with less chance of mistakes than with an H pattern manual.

I've raced both in my younger days, you can set the ratios for either box to suit engine.

BMW used to seal there auto box's. Not sure if that's still the case.

Yes apparently sealed for life although they give up at 100k miles. Filter and oil change will help solve this though

Well I always thought it was just a con to make the boxs go wrong more.

I've had several auto box's with over 200,000 without a problem.

It's like these new cars and vans that only need the oil changing every 3 years! Sounds great but have you seen the cost of the oil. Fuck me it's a good job it is every three years

my sister used to have a daf 44 it had a constant vario drive used to change the gear ratios as it felt like i.e. on a hill it would rev up but down hill revs went down it had a great big rubber band between two pulleys that moved in and out right weird driving experience

I agree only on bigger cars and when in the mood for a relax drive (auto). It depends on the car had a mini manual and a auto one. Manual any day of the week!!

I`m on my second Land Rover Discovery 300TDI Auto and I`d have another like a shot! With the first one I pulled a loaded trailer weighing around 4 tons (shhhh!) up the A30 Causeway into Shaftesbury without any fuss. The current one was romping around a very soft and muddy car park at the Malvern showground when all the modern Jap stuff was being yanked out by tractors! And they were the ones on aggressive off-road tyres compared to the very on-road biased tyres on my Disco!

The tractor I drive has an epicyclic (sp?) gearbox which is basically a manually controlled auto

It does have a clutch but I can drive it totally clutch-less which whilst needing some real concentration when loading a trailer with the front loader, doesn`t half save the left knee, something most tractor drivers seem to suffer from!

Mine doesn't even wake up till 3500rpm then switches cam at 5250.

Would an auto take it to 7000rpm seen as you have to rev the bollocks off a VTEC engine for it to do anything or change gear before.....never driven an auto as you can probably tell

The wee buggie has a semi / full auto gear box and there is no way I would buy a manual again.

I have knee problemd and found driving manuals painful.

I drive an auto 1.4 corsa 2005 reg it gets me from A-B as only zip around town, college, and gets the kids to where they wanna/need to be. It's not as zippy as the 206 I had that would shoot off. Sometimes this one takes a while to get going.

I still leave manuals behind me at the lights when pulling away. And I don't have to worry about stalking if I have a bit of a panic if I get some nutter pulling out in me.

You get an auto to hold any rev range, they just make them to change at the most economical/ driving style.

Much prefer driving Auto.

Makes me wonder really why us british in general aren't big fans though - especially guven our love of labour saving gadgets.

Autos are popular in the states. Why not have the car do the job of changing gear for you - allows you to concentrate more on the road.

Go back to trying an auto. I've tried many times in a manual but due to probs with my knees I was in too much pain. It took my 5months to pass in an auto and passed first time.

Auto every time,Having Driven since i was 12 and been blessed with the opportunity to drive most vehicles from an AC to a Veyron i cannot understand why anyone would pick a modern manual car..As for flappy Paddles Helllooo..Leave it in auto the computer can react quicker.

Having driven both I would say for the ultimate driving experience you want a manual car (I don't know of any racing cars with auto boxes).

But for relaxed cruising or blowjobs on the move auto is the way to go! The only drawback I can see is there is no vibrating gearknob for that special horsepower thrill when parked up in the dark in a quiet carpark surrounded by eager watchers flashing lights and hoping for a response!

Racing Cars arnt built for day to day Driving, Every Supercar comes with Auto as standard simply because the Computer can change gear quicker than any regular Joe

Agreed about racing cars not being built for day to day driving (although there are some that use racing cars on the road every day). However I will have to disagree with you about all super-cars having having auto box computer options. Although all SAT (semi automatic (clutchless) transmissions) have this option not all super-cars are fitted with these transmissions. Two that have fully manual gearboxes that I know of are the 911 and the Gallardo.

There's a lot of fabbers on this thread that need to get down to their GP's and tell him/her that they've lost all feeling in their right foot. Because I can select any gear I want with said right foot when driving an auto. Assuming that you wouldn't actually WANT to select 1st gear at 50+ mph of course.

You manual drivers are all in denial. Even the Formula one boys have had to concede. It's no contest!

I believe I have the best of both worlds. I drive a 2litre automatic convertible Beetle. It looks really girly but drives like shit off a shovel! It has a tiptronic gear box which means I can drive it like a geared car without a clutch. I can zoom away whenever I want. But the best is driving it in sports mode on country roads. I can drive a geared car (and do) but I wouldn't swap my car for the world.

Maybe its more about the car as I feel I can leave people standing at traffic lights in a manual (some cars better than others) more than I can in my automatic (golf was poor, peugeot slightly better). As to cruising down the motorway, yes automatic is good and I'm quite surprised at how good my cheap little peugeot is but I once cruised at 90 mph in a vectra without realising it but couldn't do it in the proton.

Depends on the car:

Had a 2.8 BMW with semi-auto / auto gearbox and that just wafted along, so auto was perfect.

Currently have a civic with manual and while accelerating the vtec kicks in and you stay in gear, the revs hit 5k and you still don't change... You hit the red line, change up and hit the vtec range...

The right gearbox is the car's choice, not yours!
