go for optical zoom and not digital zoom as its better

someone once told me that unless you are blowing pics up to poster size anything above 5mp is a waste but not sure how true that is

5mp is plenty for indoor pics (whoever told you was right, unless blowing up poster size, its enough)

7mp plus great for ouside, all the colours etc.

The sort of money the original poster mentioned should get you a very good camera. Most are pretty much the same and come with great photoshop packs(well good enough)

I have alays used finepix cameras...but thats just me.

Try the fuji jx530 all you need plus hd movies.

No i do not work for fuji, but if they will send me the hs10..i would be more than happy to advertise them

I got a 10MP Fiji one for less than 90 GBP last year from Tesco.

Good enough for most pics.

I find I have to scale the photos down considerably for loading onto the web even if I set the photo quality as normal at 1MP!

You will get a good quality camera for £170 ish... the number of pixels is not vital, as other posters have mentioned... a cpl of things are important tho...

1) how the camera feels to you...

2)a good battery life, it`s a pain in the bum getting half way thru a set of pix & the Bat goes dead....

3)it`s useful to have a view finder as well as an LED screen, specially if you are gonna take pix outside in the sun....

canon sureshot....sony cybershot... & fugi`s are all good stuff... heard samsung are making nice cameras as well....

A good tip is to pick out a cpl you like.... & do a comparison online via Google...

Happy snapping...

If you can, get a spare battery or two, as I find one is never enough!

I use a Fugi Finepix F30 with up to 6.2m pixels with a housing for underwater photography, get some fantastic shots although could do with investing in a strobe rig.
