Tis dead bar to the few Wishy.

Certain professions still use the ones you quote and those educated or widely read use a few more common ones.

Joe public wouldn't drop them into every day conversations to be fair.

Speaking of languages... I can think of a couple of perfectly good reasons why the whole world will never become totally Islamic... I can't do them blimmin' squiggly lines ... and I'm reminded of Rowan Atkinson in the Barclaycard ads when it comes to arabic... "Shali shali dak dak"... "How much for the rug?"

Plumb bob or savul

"Plumb bobs" were used by the Ancient Romans and most probably by the Ancient Egyptians. Shape varies but the basic is a metal weight (usually lead) with a eyelet at the top for the string.

Note: "Plumb" comes from the Latin word plumbum which literally means lead.

I think there is a picture of one in a book I have called "Technology in the Ancient World" by Pelican (the brand used by the British publishers Peguin for reprints of classics, etc.)

Another book I have is called something like "Ancient Chinese Technology" and was published in Beijing, China; but I cannot recall if it had a plumb bob.

Like Ancient Greek, Latin is not necessarily a language for everybody and not obviously useful to many, however, it helped me tremendously in all my other languages - for one you learn to think "structurally", appreciate underlying grammar and its irregularities and also a lot of English words (those ending in "tion" and "tude" to name just a couple) are based on Latin.

I guess it should be on offer for those who have a gift for and an interest in languages - but not a mandatory subject.

"

it does - famous old joke about a man going to the doc and telling his wife that he has to take some medicine "rectally" and neither of them know what it means. Man goes back to doc and asks again to be told to take the medicine "anally". Sadly - and as he is not a swinger... he does not that word either...so him and his wife decide to go back once more to seek clarification. After all, medicine has to be taken the right way.

When the man comes back from doc this time he tells the wife that the good doc got impatient and cross this time as he told him to"stick it up his arse"
