To all those who lost their lives that awful day, Rest In Peace.

~

I'm watching a TV programme about it at the moment and of all the stories about the people who lost their lives that day one of the most poignant was of Julianne Valentine McCourt who was just 4 years old. She was on the second plane that hit the twin towers with her mother. They were flying to New York for a family gathering at her uncle's house. Amazingly, her uncle was IN the second tower when their plane hit it. His sister Ruth and her daughter Julianne perished. The family gathering was for Julianne's cousin, who's 11th birthday was on 9/11.

I never know what to say in things like this if im honest.

I just hope no one has to ever witness anything like it again....

And my thoughts are with those who had to deal with the aftermath and the loss of loved ones.

i'll never forget that day, where I was, watching sky news as the second plane went into the building and the silence then the furor when everyone realised it was no accident. trying to track down all the records of folk we had that were working out there...

we, thankfully, did not lose anyone, but it was no less traumatic and we held a special private memorial for those that did perish.

i have all the newspapers from that next day.

it's changed the world

as usual, my thoughts are with the families and friends of those that perished

Ditto. I was working from home and turned on the TV at the exact moment the second plane hit - the one mentioned in my OP with the little girl on it. I watched her die, but obviously I couldn't have known that then.

It was shocking, and it certainly changed the world in which we lived. It predated everything before it so concisely, any film or news item or documentary, or photograph even, where you see the twin towers you *know* it was made prior to 2001.

does anyone give a toss what happened on 9/11 ?

Not according to the many people who are against the fight to rid Iraq of the people who financed and supported Bin Laden.

Not according to the people who spoke in the forums not long ago about British troops who should not be deployed in Afghanistan, some of whom said we invaded Afghanistan without justification or cause.

Do people realise just how many terrorist acts have been prevented by intelligence gained during those fights, about how many have been stopped by our interuption of thier plans, our breaking of many of thier supply chains and training camps ?

This is a big subject, there will be another 9/11 one day, but I am thankfull that there are people risking thier lives today to try and prevent that happening.

I am sorry for those who died on 9/11, I am sorry for thier families, I am full of admiration for the thousands of true heroes that emerged that day and I hope that the sacrifices being made daily by our troops and others, by good and kind Iraqis and non extremist muslims in Pakistan and Afghanistan will be appreciated by everyone as they should be.

The sad fact is people do not know how much effort and hard work has been done to prevent further bloodshed on western soil. If they did there would be a very different attitude.

Newcastle and Gateshead

I know some of you know my story....

I was actually in new york 3 days before the attacks.... and september 11th was my 1st day working for American Express...

so at just after quarter to 2 we hear there had been some kind of accident with some light plane going into a building....

then at 2, the boss comes out of the office and says an americans or people with relatives in new york in the office please come to this meeting....

and thats is when we found out the full extent of what happened.....

we were offered the rest of the day off and everyone snapped that up...

I suppose it a way I escaped as my family wasn't directly affected.... my aunt worked in the WTC but hadn't made it into work yet..... my cousin actually worked at the american express building and when the 2nd one hit, to use his words, they just the fuck out of there and walked all the way back to flushing...

It took a few days to try and account for everyone....

in the end though I did lose 6 darn good friends .... 3 who worked for Cantor Fitzgerald, 3 who worked for Morgan Stanley

I went back to each of the funerals....

on this day I tend to be around, but for me it isn't a day of arguements, it is very much a day of reflexion and remembering those who died........

leave the contenious stuff for another day......

cant even begin to think what fear or feelings the poor victims tragically had to endure waiting to die on that horrific day, also hearing some of the recordings of people saying goodbye to there familes on the phone is just heartbreaking, unfortunatley i fear this won't be the last of this kind of lunacy. something has to change in this race (humans), children being orphaned for any reason is simply disgusting, thoughts go out to all those who have lost, and all those who are stuck out in warzones just doing there job, risking there lives as an ongoing result.

(this wasnt meant as a rant about politics or religions or to offend anyone, simply to say enough blood has been shed and it needs to stop, thanks for reading

Fabio I didnt realise you lost friends in it.xxxx

I have been watching the programmes about it.

I was breastfeeding my young baby while watching it mesmorised and seemingly unable to remove myself from the tv.

He is 9 now and a healthy loving young lad. I am lucky as every year I have seen him grow, all the people who lost someone dont get that.

Cant think of what to say as words just dont seem to express it. Except silence and deep thought for all those affected.

RIP all the people who died, helped and suffered as a result of it.

Off to cuddle my kids x

I remember thinking that the new millenium was just a year old and look at what's happened already, and what will man do to man in the remaining 999 years until the next millenium arrives.

A sobering thought.

AN EPITAPH NAMED "WHY?"

~

Who can count the number that have died?

Who can name the girl who's broken doll lies,

Among all the debris, among all the dust.

~

Who can catch the woman that was falling,

From the umpteenth floor silently calling,

To her watching husband - "Don't forget me!"

~

Who can imagine the horror of seeing,

A doom approaching, no point in fleeing.

Where will I run to, where will I hide?

~

Who ever thought of this unthinkable nightmare?

In rescue we came, but in death we left there.

We died for our jobs and for our country.

~

Who can I turn to in my desolate grief?

When there are no bodies, where to lay my wreath?

Bewilderment and confusion - my left and right.

~

What can my leaders say when words have no depth?

The only democracy is the democracy of death,

Let peace and freedom come and claim me.

~

~ dedicated to those who lost their lives on 9/11

Whilst the events 9 years ago are distressing lets pause and think of the countless lives saved by the events of Sept 11th 2001.... The lives saved due to the New Yorkers no longer funding the IRA via NORAID, the realism that terrorism is not somebody else’s problem.

It is no coincidence that the IRA started decommissioning its arms in October 2001, not because it felt obliged to but because the money had run out and the Americans were not donating as they had now experienced terrorism first hand.

Whilst it was innocent New Yorkers who suffered on Sept 11th 2001 it was innocent British citizens who have suffered through the years because of the IRA and the funding from NORAID and their very rich and influential supporters.

No apologies for the political content of this post but when was the last time we saw a post remembering the Warrington bomb or Enniskillen?

I'm Irish and am certainly not proud of the events in either Warrington/Manchester/Birmingham/London/Omagh or indeed any attack on innocent lives!

Let's just remember all those that lost their lives due to selfish people that believe they have the right to take another life.

Paddy xx

this thread was solely intended to pay our respects to the fok of 9/11.

we have had threads previously to remember other atrocities and if you feel like anyone is being left out, then why not remember them in your own way?

And it wasn't just Americans that dies, It was British, Irish, French, German...and from all walks of life, from the cleaners to the CEO's and the services that attended the scene and lost their lives saving others.

There are so many threads that are open to discuss the political _iews and ongoing war that is a result of that day. Please respect that we only want to remember this day in this way...is it really too much to ask that one thread is reserved for that purpose?

Having had direct involvement in the atrocities of human against human, the act of terrorism is self fuelling. The more we react the more self indulgent the terrorist organisations become. Apathy is not the answer as we must remember the innocent people affected. Whilst we as humans live in a blame filled culture we incite reaction, cause & effect. Serious research into the human nature is the only way to stop humans battling humans. Why one person believes it is justified to injure, mutilate or kill another is way beyond me.

One day society will look back & think why?

That day may be one of two.

The day we self destruct! OR

The day we embrace each other!

By embracing those who have lost their loved ones we will get there one day soon!

I was still living back home in Canada then, it was my day off and I was just doing the washing up listening to the radio when they announced something about a small plane having hit one of the towers. I turned on the television and called my Dad to see if he had heard.I was on the phone with him when the second plane struck,we both just fell silent, not knowing what to say. I watched the whole thing unfold as it was happening, my heart just sinking thinking of all the people. I had been chatting to someone from New York on YAHOO for ages, who worked in the WTC and was only able to find out days later that he had not been in that day and thankfully everyone from his office made it out.

One of my cousins who is in the American military is flying home today after a 6 month tour..wishing him a safe journey home xx

And Fabio, I am so sorry that you lost friends on that awful day. My thoughts and prayers go out to you and their families xxx

I remember 9/11 clearly and I was really shocked. Like everyone I watched the news footage with a mix of horror and amazement, thinking surely this cant be real. It was almost like watching a disaster movie but feeling terror cos it was no movie.

I have been to Ground Zero quite a few times and it never fails to sober me. Just seeing the cranes and the building site etc and remembering the hive of industry that previously took place there but most importantly all of those who lost their lives and those who have never been found. Every time I go to New York I visit Ground Zero, not because I have a ghoulish fascination but I feel that im lucky to be able to go on holiday there and part of my trip should be given up to remember those who lost their lives.

I've just watched the film United 93 which is about the 4th plane that day that the passengers fought back and crashed it into a field.

A very moving and harrowing story that left me feeling very very angry at these so called 'muslims' who destroyed so many lives so needlessly.

It's not hard to understand how one can feel so much animosity towards a particular faith when you see the real lives behind the people they murdered.

I know it was just a mindless few who committed these awful attrocities but the anger and dismay you feel is very real indeed.
