So, Cameron will do what Thatcher failed to do and privatise the Royal Mail.

That should improve things...

Shall we go back to Pigeons? Might be a good idea

royal mail lost it's monopoly about 4 years ago to allow other postal services to 'get a piece', i haven't seen anything on the scene, other than courier services, and I'm wondering what confidence Average Joe is going to have with a privatised postal service.

I already use email for the majority of things, I can see me relying on that more and more

I've worked for the Royal Mail and it is an institution. I'll be sorry to see it go but it will continue in some form or another. The private sector will hive off the more profitable parts like parcel delivery (on the increase due to people ordering goods over the net).

I'm not sure what will happen to post offices up and down the country and registered/recorded mail will still be needed.

Vince Cable said today that the Royal Mail pension fund has a shortfall of some £10bn which has to be made up from somewhere and the govt don't have the cash to bail that out. Private finance is the only viable option but I'd like to see it as a partnership that keeps the Royal Mail brand, red letterboxes, official postmen etc etc but some of the profits will have to go back to the private businesses that invest in it - and cuts will have to be made if they're not hitting targets. That's the reality of it.

I also feel for all those small offices in out of the way places. its a life line to alot of people.

I know of many who go regular to get there money etc.

If it goes private, whats gonna happen to them ?

I can. Today. Posted 3 letters. And they'll get there tomorrow.

That's what I'll miss most, that peace of mind *knowing* it will be there tomorrow morning.

Aha. Just read on BBC website that the Post Office network will remain under govt ownership taking care of sorting & delivery of letters, but as a seperate entity from the rest of the services the Royal Mail currently offer, which will be sold off to private companies or possibly even a public offering of shares.

But, unsurprisingly, Billy Hayes, gen sec of the CWU is casting his usual doom & gloom approach over it. He'd rather keep it as it is, losing money hand over fist, until it collapses altogether and is worth nothing to any potential investor whilst millions of postmen and women lose their pensions.

These days its all about money and while nothing can be had for nowt...its the knock on effect that causes the problems.

Years ago when we had the postman , the milkman, breadman , coalman etc etc.

They also formed part of the community.

A solid base really in which we were born.

It was often one of these who alerted the neighbours if anything was wrong...

gladys hasnt took her milk in...joes papers were still there in the letter box and old ted didnt have any coal and was poorly.

All these services have fast disappeared along with that community spirit .

What we have now is nothing in comparrison.

Where community and caring are dirty words.

I know which i would rather have

No matter where it is going.

The Royal mail may have lost its monopoly a few years ago, but the private sector only want the money making bits. They'll want more than the cost of a first class stamp to deliver a birthday card to the back of beyond in some rural area.

The thing is, they need the profitable bits to help subsidise the not so profit making bits…. thus enabling the provision of a wider range of service… such as the letters to the back of beyond.

It is a bit like what happened to public transport 20 or so years ago. The busy peak hours in urban areas subsidised the running cost of early morning, late night and rural buses. Then they deregulated and privatised…. and all of the not so profitable routes and timetables went out of the window. So the councils had to pay for contracts for some village somewhere to keep it’s bus service (reduced frequency of course). So the private owned bits earned the money for a few and the tax payer was left to foot the bill for the rest.

we have lost a lot of these services over the years which come down to making a viable service but which kept communtities alive!,they tried to blame it on margaret thatcher at first but who will they blame it on now?.

my thoughts are the unions are destroying these industries with extortionate wage/conditions without a thought for the present climate but what is our resident devonshire forum knowall's view on this?.

The privatisation has been botched, largely because it's a political hot potato for any government.

This has meant that the Post Office has suffered from "top slicing", where the most profitable bits get sold off.

Private companies fell over themselves for the lucrative parcels market, where people like TNT & DHL have large market share.

The problem is that nobody wants the relatively unprofitable and shrinking (due to email etc) letters part.

The argument now is about something called "the last mile" - this is the bit where the letter/package goes from the depot to your house - it's the most labour intensive, expensive and least time effective bit. But without the last mile, the rest of the network is useless.

What will probably happen is the Post Office will end up a little bit like BT is now. They will provide the "network" of posties and other companies will pay them to do their deliveries. In the same way as BT provide infrastructure and other broadband companies can buy capacity on it.

There really isn't any need for you to keep speaking like that about other members.
