"Home cover on home insurance policy covers ours. If you are a landlord you can get insurance cover for that which is probably cheaper and better service than BG " . Will investigate .However I need a service where the fault is fixed next day . Thanks for the advice.

"The service cover I have on my heating is £10.99 a month per house. Covers all gas appliances and an annual gas certification visit " Which company provides this service and how quickly do they come out in the event of a breakdown ?

"I have a number of different contracts with British Gas for home care of central heating systems and often wondered whether they are good value or not. As I pay out about £ 330 per house would it be better just to put the premiums in a savings account and buy a new boiler every seven years . British Gas are good in that they will usually come next day if you are without heat or water . The downside is that they will not work in a house unaccompanied and you have to be there to let them in . With a local engineer you can just give them a key and they will let themselves in. I also noticed that recently British Gas cancelled two of my appointments for non urgent work and I was only informed on the day that the work was due to be undertaken. If using local engineers would it be realistic to expect them to be available to come to your house next day ?. As the houses have tenants all repairs must be done promptly , but if possible I prefer to use local reliable tradesmen . In this case ,I feel that I am depriving local engineers out out work , but I cannot take the risk that they may not be available to do the job next day . If however they have lots of work anyway they may not want my Businness.Another advantage of British Gas is that tenants can contact them directly if necessary. At policy renewal time as with most insurers you always have to negotiate a discount or they will charge you at least twenty percent extra . " I have this service too and like you I think that it is expensive ... BUT. I work away a lot and the saving of aggravation by having this contract in place is immeasurable. You have to have the annual gas certificate anyway so why not just get the service plan as well? Peace of mind does not come cheap.

On a friends landlord insurance it is seen to within 24 hours

" It's within 24 hrs and its a company in West Yorkshire called first call, British gas rang me a few months ago to get my business and they said they'd do it for less, I'm still waiting for the details though.
