Service Contracts for Central Heating

I have a number of different contracts with British Gas for home care of central heating systems and often wondered whether they are good value or not. As I pay out about £ 330 per house would it be better just to put the premiums in a savings account and buy a new boiler every seven years . British Gas are good in that they will usually come next day if you are without heat or water . The downside is that they will not work in a house unaccompanied and you have to be there to let them in . With a local engineer you can just give them a key and they will let themselves in. I also noticed that recently British Gas cancelled two of my appointments for non urgent work and I was only informed on the day that the work was due to be undertaken. If using local engineers would it be realistic to expect them to be available to come to your house next day ?. As the houses have tenants all repairs must be done promptly , but if possible I prefer to use local reliable tradesmen . In this case ,I feel that I am depriving local engineers out out work , but I cannot take the risk that they may not be available to do the job next day . If however they have lots of work anyway they may not want my Businness.Another advantage of British Gas is that tenants can contact them directly if necessary. At policy renewal time as with most insurers you always have to negotiate a discount or they will charge you at least twenty percent extra .

Total waste of money, use a local plumber and if you've got a lot of property he should look after you for the repast work

In my own little world

Like BT, British Gas gains most of its clients through being so big but I wouldn't say the service and customer service is any good.

Look up your local BNI (Business Network International), they are bound to have a good quality heating engineer/plumber, that would be able to meet your requirements.

Home cover on home insurance policy covers ours. If you are a landlord you can get insurance cover for that which is probably cheaper and better service than BG

as a person that does the repairs on flats or houses then you need someone that can do that sort of work and possibly more

others may class it as odd jobs man but a person who has good knowledge of many types of the building trade is someone much better

they also may do the work but know someone else that can test the work

Which company provides this service and how quickly do they come out in the event of a breakdown ?

I have this service too and like you I think that it is expensive ... BUT. I work away a lot and the saving of aggravation by having this contract in place is immeasurable. You have to have the annual gas certificate anyway so why not just get the service plan as well? Peace of mind does not come cheap.

On our Home cover the boiler is seen to the same day. On a friends landlord insurance it is seen to within 24 hours

It's not the cheapest way to do it but it certainly has it's advantages.

Not all repairs can be done next day even if you can get an engineer to it next day!.

A good quality boiler which has been well fitted will certainly be more reliable than cheap/badly fitted ones.

On the whole brutish gas or any other provider will always try to skirt around the policy's small print so be careful.

It's within 24 hrs and its a company in West Yorkshire called first call, British gas rang me a few months ago to get my business and they said they'd do it for less, I'm still waiting for the details though.
