ok - as some of you know im on a high dose of codeine amongst other things - and if i miss or take late or try to do without a dose i get all ggrrr inside - get the twtichy fidgets- this last week or so ive had a fever and have added in paracetamol to cool me down - drank loads of water - basically body clock all over the place - totally ruined my med routine - eaten and slept at different times - joints are hurting - ive checked and its all just levels gone to pot and im just thinking here how the hell do people with a full on drug habit go cold turkey - must be hell

I don't think cold turkey is good on the body. My friend was once addicted to codeine and diazepam. She had to cut her pills by 1/4 a week until she was off them.

I was on codeine for a while when I ruined my back , when I stopped taking them it was horrible , all I kept thinking was that Il just have one more to help me sleep , I resisted and over time it got better , now I'm really wary of such strong medication

the last time i took them was many years ago and after i had the spianl injection the specialist said oh you can stop the codeine now - so i did - two days later i had to get help and doctor tole me to take them again straight away - was only then i realised that codeine transforms into morphine in the body - this time around ive been on them a lot longer on a higher dose plus other things - just dont know how the addicts cope

Being addicted is a horrible thing! My friend has an illnes and came off the codeine, but is now addicted to the stronger dihydracodeine!

She panics of they are not in her bag! The thought of not taking one increases her panic and fear!

It's amazing really , I was never warned of the dangers , and yes being a full on addict must be an absolute living nightmare

I'm on pills now that we're to control my OCD when I was diagnosed with it years ago.

I thought it was only for short term, doctors didn't tell me they were for longer, but apparently they are a bitch to come off!

So looks like I'm stuck with them for the moment

Yeah, but I hate taking pills! I hate the thought that my thinking process is controlled by pills and not myself if that makes any sense.

it makes a lot of sense - my job is a mental health support worker - i have a lady who went into crisis today from not taking meds - the third time in less than a year - her paranoia is her worst enemy and she is very obsessive about her meds she hates to take them

I have much respect for you in that profession, it must be hard!

My OCD was for cleanliness, checking and being obsessive with researching topics, particularly illnesses.

I'm ok now and have now signs of it! thats why I want to come off the pills.

talk to your gp/cpn/councellor about coming off - see what other support groups there are about in your area - i bet there is a forum which you can join -

no probs - just dont think because you have no symptoms its gone - the meds help with that - but you know that - but if youve got your head around the problem then with assistance and support you can come off the drugs - just dont be rash and do it alone - no shame in having help

Agreed and its best not to try to skip a dose etc. I use the alarm on my phone to keep me on schedule with my meds although at the moment it's only breakfast and bedtime.

i cant take tramadol - i had the wierdest panic attacks and amitryptilline (sp?) made me hallucinate - so codeine it is - im ok with it just all gone to pot this week - i know i can come off when i need to but the addicts who take heavy stuff that withdraw inbetween fixes must be awful

Was taking Codeine like Smarties up til a couple of months ago, they weren't helping with the pain in the slightest. Am now on Tramadol which is much more effective but fucks up ma sleep patterns and makes me constipated
