I think it said she gets child benefit for three kids. One child has some disability so she gets invalidity benefit for that child. Plus her own dole. Plus tax credits and her rent paid . .All adding to over 35k per year.

its time this was stopped. All of it.

They have capped benefits...however DLA is not a means tested benefit so they may get that on top...

It's time the state stopped supporting children? Or supporting people who are unemployed? Or keeping roofs over the heads of families?

What an odd opinion.

There is a cap.

However, if you're in receipt of DLA or PIP you are exempt or the money that is awarded is not counted.

You should only get out of the system what you have put into the pot.

Regardless of how many kids you have. Regardless of how available jobs Are.

Only the severely disabled should qualify for long term benefits.

So what do you do? Do you want the children to suffer hardship? Its clear the family need support and help you only have to look at the state of the accommodation to see that. Its about education not sanction

why don't they overhaul the benefits system and instead of dishing out millions of pounds switch it over to a voucher system which can be used in government run stores something along the same line as Aldis it'll create jobs at the same time or strike a deal with the current supermarkets and stop shelling out all that money to people who have no intention of ever getting a job because the state gives them everything they need it would save so much money long term and it could be used for better things like the nhs

The purpose of such programmes us to encourage a gut reaction to headlines, without displaying the facts objectively first, as it will help bring the ad money in.

Unfortunately it seems to be the direction most programmes are going nowadays.

Yes you can. Form a political party and stand for election. Your platform could be equality and reason which is what this country is all about not stupid television programmes on those who need help! I would vote for you. After watching Milliband and Cameron on the swiss bank account "debate" yesterday you could do a lot better!

Yes its just the government using its influence to whip up hysteria. The real issue and crime is that we have a prime minister who has appointed a phone hacker as his director of communications and a tax evasion facilitator to be his business minister. In the real world he would be sacked for having extremely poor judgement!

If you lost your job, you'd be happy to have zero financial support from the state? Would you wish the same on some poor hard-working guy or gal who loses their low paid job?

Callous in the extreme.

"I think it said she gets child benefit for three kids. One child has some disability so she gets invalidity benefit for that child. Plus her own dole. Plus tax credits and her rent paid . .All adding to over 35k per year.

its time this was stopped. All of it.

I know they are onto a good thing, just having a kid with dyslexia and they get free laptops and free everything.

so rather than support someone with a disability and give them the means to be on a level playing field with their peers we withdraw it..?

and diminish their chances to succeed in life and by doing so contribute to society..?

great plan..

Yes great plan. The money isn't going to be there for ever though is it. In a few years time we will be a third world country.

My ignorance or your fear

fear of what, something that wont happen..

if you seriously think that we will be a 3rd world country because kids with dyslexia have support then you are ignorant..

Ok, fear of something that is likely to happen maybe not for a long time yet, what makes you so sure that it wont happen, not just because of kids with dyslexia of course.

As you obviously don't understand your own reasoning here is some bits of info for you that might help you see why your opinions are being mocked:

1) The UK has the fifth largest economy in terms of GDP in the world, and is on track to become the fourth largest.

2) A 'third world country' is a term that is used a refer to a developing nation.

Basically, the government could shower laptops on every man, woman and child in this country, and we wouldn't be in any danger of becoming a third world country.

If anything, we would probably see an economic boost.

I think you have confused yourself? You are asserting that if we (in the UK) continue to operate a welfare system we will become a third world country. On what factual basis do you assert that hypothesis? The department for work and pensions accounts for circa 8% of GDP. So if we carry on spending on defence for example pro rata to GDP will that force us into a third world situation? also

"why don't they overhaul the benefits system and instead of dishing out millions of pounds switch it over to a voucher system which can be used in government run stores something along the same line as Aldis it'll create jobs at the same time or strike a deal with the current supermarkets and stop shelling out all that money to people who have no intention of ever getting a job because the state gives them everything they need it would save so much money long term and it could be used for better things like the nhs

Fantastic idea. I bet all those families who are in receipt of working tax credit (there are more families receiving this than JSA for example) will love it too. "

Why? if it gives enough to feed everyone correctly clothe them and keep them warm under a decent roof why should we subsidise the booze / fags and the 50" plasma tellys?

Quote from Guardian ‘Opinion’ thread:

3250 – Number of staff at DWP investigating benefit fraud of £1.2 billion.(Source DWP)

300 – Number of staff at HMRC investigating tax evasion of £70 billion+(Source HMRC tax evasion report March 2012)

Cameron also cut the HMRC budget by £577 million, uncollected tax rose by £3 billion.

Good luck.

Yes, most on benefits are keen - even desperate - to get back to work, tired of living off a pittance and living with the threat of that being taken away, allied to the self respect that comes from working for a reasonable living. So hope you get what you want.

As for the inter_iew, maybe not wearing any knickers might bring more luck? Matt

Your absolutely right. How dare anyone with a disabled child expect help from the state after the last Tory government closed down all the hospitals in favor of 'care in the community'.

Much better to open a camp, (lets put it near Coatbridge and call it something like Sobijock), then we can send all those you consider unworthy, unproductive or disabled to it and solve the problem once and for all...

Yup, you mentioned them the Television program does have a "hate the benefit users" agenda, could almost be financed by the government it serves their agenda so well. I don't watch it properly but was struck by the irony of a fashionably dressed teenage girl texting on her iPhone to scrounge cash for food... Poster girl for the cut benefits lobby.

You're very gullible but the government love people like you, who totally buy into their propaganda so easily.

It's blatantly clear that you don't have a clue about the benefit system.

But it was on TV and it's in the papers so it must be true, right?

Carry on with the anger, prejudice and hatred, by all means, but know that you're showing your ignorance and extreme gullibility every time you comment.

It's not all you're showing but it's always useful when people demonstrate who they really are.

You're a pawn being used by the government and if you bothered to actually find out the truth about the welfare system in this country, if you're any sort of human at all, you'd be appalled and thoroughly ashamed of yourself.

People are going hungry to feed their kids. They're having to choose between heating their home and eating. They're relying on food banks because they are desperate. They're losing their homes. In some tragic cases people have died as a result of the failings of our "welfare" system and they won't be the last.

Poverty is at a frightening level in this country now and still increasing.

Those you see paraded on the programmes mentioned and in articles designed to - and, incredibly, succeeding in - making the poor hate the even poorer are a tiny, tiny, tiny minority.

Very few people are living well on benefits, or even in low paid work. Most are suffering, some worse than others, and some are suffering very badly indeed.

However, I know you won't look for the truth and you'll see what you want to see. Your sort generally do.

I'm so disappointed in our species sometimes; certain members of it, anyway.

True but there is a difference between someone having expensive medical treatment because they get ill or having their wages topped up with tax credits because they are trying to help themselves but just don't earn enough and someone who activity chooses to sit on benefits all their lifes spitting out kid after kid with no intentions of ever supporting them themselves

Correct this is an open forum, you are entitled to voice any belief you hold and I would defend that right with my last breath. However if the beliefs you voice are of intolerance, bigotry and prejudice do not be surprised when you are challenged and they are compared to others who held similar _iews.

If you don't like being compared to the Nazi's, don't voice _iews that can be compared to those of the Nazis.

As for being angry, you have every right to be angry but please direct your anger in the right direction. Don't direct it at those who have been thrown on the scrap heap, direct it at those who for the sake of an extra 0 on the balance of a bank account in a foreign country (money they can never spend) have systematically stripped industry and wealth and now infrastructure from this country!

And if you don't know what I am talking about go out and look at the state of the roads, the lack of social housing, the queues at your local A&E, the lack of bobbies on the beat... The list goes on and on...

Then ask yourself why do we import coal when this is an island of coal? Why are all the shipyards gone, when this is an island and everything we trade has to travel over the sea that surrounds us? Why do we allow foreign countries to run parts of our government for their profit when we cant do the same in their countries?

Ask yourself what has happened to all the people (and their children) who used to do all those jobs that have been exported to China and the Far East? And who is really ripping this country off? The woman with a disabled child or the bastards who have asset stripped this country to satisfy their personal greed?

Finally may I suggest that rather than looking for people worse off than you to do down and grind into the dirt your time may be better employed in looking to see whose boot is on your neck grinding you into the mire.

It's not just me that sees intolerance and bigotry. I know I am very caustic and sarcastic at times, more than I should be. but the truth is we are sleepwalking into becoming a fascist state in exactly the same way as Germany and Italy sleepwalked into fascism in the late 20's and early 30's.

It is not the system that needs overhauling, it's the corrupt way it is administrated that needs to change.

We need stop this rush to a completely open Laissez faire economy and return to a genuinely mixed economy where the state runs essential services on our behalf on a 'not for profit' basis.

Black&White Utopia

Don't watch these programs cos don't ever feel its a true representation of what us really going on.

Just to show the other side of the coin what about all those benifits that are not claimed? If we are lead to believe all we read/ watch in the media what about this?! :

'Awareness'

The DWP has outlined data on the various income-related benefits that were not claimed. The latest figures, which refer to 2009-10, include:

Up to 620,000 people failing to claim up to £2bn in income support, and employment and support allowance

Up to 1.6 million people failing to claim up to £2.8bn in pension credit

Up to 1.1 million people not claiming up to £3.1bn in housing benefit

Up to 3.2 million people missing out on up to £2.4bn in council tax benefit

Up to 610,000 people failing to claim up to £1.95bn in jobseeker's allowance

Now if this was added to all thise £1000's already claimed would the situation be even worse? If people are entitled to stuff should they not claim? Some say they don't claim, only cos they don't know they are able to! My point being that not every one is a scum bag cheating benifit looser and all the ' immigrants' aint claiming all our benifits! Will there be TV programs telling the oldens they can have a warm house and food every day, and not have to choose between the two ... Same with families and housing! Course not! The World gone mad! Put a tv programe on , rattle sum cages and before ya know it all cheating scum bags ... Get real!

I used to have the biasef opinion that people on benefits are getting too much if tgey can afford the luxeries in these type of shows then ive recently been.made redundant. Couldnt have come at a worse time as im currently pregnant with baby number 3, and now im struggling on the pittance im given, the reality is these people paying for these luxeries are obviously in unimaginable amounts of debt, they have to be as i know i cant afford such luxeries like posh tvs, holidays, tattoos etc, but of course they wont show you the reality of that debt they are in for choosing to spend their benefit on the wrong things, I personally choose to put it all on my monthly outgoings as opposed to luxeries and im still just scrapping by.

I have however always worked full time since the age of 16 until i was laid off, so have paid my dues in that sense, im truely grateful for the welfare i do recieve or me and my kids would be homeless and destitute by now, but id rather be working as I was much better off, so I have every intention of finding work asap.

Valuable lesson here is dont judge until youve walked a mile in another persons shoes. Ive certainly learnt my lesson the hard way

You seem to be forecasting Armageddon because of spending on the welfare system? I have eyes and a I read around this subject and your fear may have some foundation if we do not spend national income in the right places. I somehow cannot correlate a nuclear deterrent (costing 5 times the welfare budget)with cuts in welfare services?

You are looking but cannot see! Just now on Radio 4 it seems that all banks operate a private service to wealthy clients with the specific purpose to avoid income tax. Perhaps Channel 5 will make a reality programme about that but I rather doubt it as the shock value of it will not be the same.

The land of grey peas and bacon

This country is far from fucked as a country we are far better off than a lot of countries in this world. We have clean running water, electricity, food, gas, housing, employment a welfare system that helps the most vulnerable of society. We are an open liberal country. We have free health care. I think the countries that are truely fucked are those that don't have any of the above but what I do think they have is hope. Which I think we severely lack over here. This country is unlikely to turn into a third world country anytime soon well not in my lifetime or the generation after that. If you want to change things then speak up make your voice heard instead of moaning about it on an forum.

On a more positive tack, it's heartening to see how many people on here recognise things like Benefits Britain for the propagandist trash it is, and aren't taken in by the wildly distorted story that politicians are trying to feed us about the state of the country and the poor, weak and disabled.

If this thread is any reflection of the wider populace, maybe there is some hope after all!

If you can point out a single adult in this country that doesn't "contribute a penny to the pot" I'd be bloody impressed.

Everyone pays VAT. VED (more commonly known as car tax) is tax that goes directly into the general tax coffers. There's an outrageous quantity of tax on fuel. Gas and electricity are taxed. I haven't checked but I suspect most utilities, if not all, are taxed.

And all these people living the life of Riley that you claim, smoking and drinking, will be paying tax on the cigarettes and alcohol.

Absolutely every adult contributes something to the pot.

Every adult in this country is a tax payer, which makes all the rhetoric about "tax payers" totally moronic.

There speaks someone who has no idea what the reality ofliving in a third world country is.

How could anyone with eyes in their head not know that. Oh well it wont happen while you are around but possibly will when your grankids are.

I realy fear for their future."

I do know that in Europe we have a long way to go before we reach third world status. Of course I am concerned for the future but my concerns don't centre on the UK becoming third world.

"This country is far from fucked as a country we are far better off than a lot of countries in this world. "

This country will never be a third world country. Even in the Victorian era of workhouses, which we seem to be heading back to, it was nowhere near that.

We're a developed nation and in some things we remain at the forefront of development. We're not going to un-devlop, not even in a multitude of generations.

Those rattling on about us becoming a third world country have absolutely no idea what a third world country is!

I had to dip out of this thread last night as I actually found it very upsetting.

I work in a neighbourhood where 95% of the residents are in receipt of benefits. I could sit here all day and tell you harrowing stories of families torn apart by poverty, about individuals with no future because we as a society have written them off, young people who want to work but can't get a job because of where they live (post code discrimination), families who can't afford to heat their homes or eat, people who cannot read or write being sanctioned because they didn't/ can't complete their JSA obligations or because they didn't register online with Universal Jobs Match because they don't have a computer or internet access...

For me this is the reality of Benefits Britain that isn't shown on TV.

I am no bleeding heart either. I am obligated legally and morally to report benefit fraud. In 2014 I didn't make a single report.

I think people mistake poverty as being just about money. It isn't. Poverty is about lack of aspiration and opportunity, low educational attainment, poor health and limited life expectancy, poor housing and high levels of crime etc and unfortunately for all of those of you who live blinkered lives, this is the reality for a big proportion of our fellow citizens.

C'mon, there are loads of people that really "take the piss" out of this country.

Then There are asylum seekers stuck in Calais that have made a LONG journey just to get to Calais, there main goal is to get to UK. but i'm think i'm sure that asylum seekers can claim asylum in the first "safe" country they come to. These people risk thee health and LIFES to get here.

But it's quite easy to believe that we have clean running water I only need to walk into my kitchen and turn the tap to prove it. Claiming that we will soon be a third world country is extreme and does imply that you have no real knowledge of the reality of what being one of those countries means.

I have seen our health service deteriorate in recent years and experienced bad times due to the fluctuating jobs market but have never had to walk two days to get medical help because my kid drank untreated water.

There are no fairies in my world.

Everything is not lovely for a huge number of people in this country. Poverty is growing.

However poverty does not a third world country make.

We're a developed nation. We're not going to un-devlop.

You show your ignorance of what "third world country" actually means.

Wish I could run the country, but I can't Yes you can. Form a political party and stand for election. Your platform could be equality and reason which is what this country is all about not stupid television programmes on those who need help! I would vote for you. After watching Milliband and Cameron on the swiss bank account "debate" yesterday you could do a lot better!"

Some people are easier to manipulate and control than others.

Those on benefits, immigrants etc are just 'tools' used to deflect. In a blame culture these tools are used to provide the masses with a small defenseless subsection of society to blame, some sadly fall for it. They are all too willing to adopt the 'us and them' instead of the 'we' approach to building our society.

What is encouraging reading threads like this is how many people no longer fall for these divide and conquer or smoke and mirror tactics.

As people become more educated and aware, those that choose to support a lack of compassion as the basis for their arguments are having to employ more extreme shock tactics in order to cling to obsolete arguments.

I've seen terms like third world and armageddon used on this thread.....come on, it's getting a bit silly to blame our impending doom on an unemployed mother trying to raise her kids...isn't it??
