success is often associated (rightly or wrongly)with the less attractive attributes but quite often our most successful people could be described as giving good value as people too. Of course it depends on how you define success and value.

I didn't see anything in the quote that implied they were, what did jump out though was, without placing a value upon his own personal success, wouldn't a man of value to others simply be taken advantage of?

Just trying to open out the discussion. I think the one depends on the other to be honest, as I said before it depends how you define each term

Off the top of my head, I suppose you could define success as your own ability to achieve positives, and value as your ability to help others achieve the same.

I would imagine that it largely depends on your measurement of 'success'.

For me success is about creating a positive impact on the world. For me to regard myself as successful it means that I have made a genuine difference to the way that things are and moved the world forward in a positive way.

I'm ok with that. And I feel that kind of success also adds value.

I would agree. To me value does not mean 'useful to people' either, it it more about good character, integrity, authenticity etc. Virtues have intrinsic value, success is ephemeral.

Surely the quote is intended to be a conundrum. Both success & value are subjective and cannot be measured in an objective fashion. Its a bit like asking, "what came first, the chicken or the egg?".
