When my team, west ham, won promotion to the first division in 1991, the goalkeeper, ludo miklosko, was the main reason for winning promotion. I'm convinced that without him we would have been mid table that year.

David de Gea seems to be doing the same thing this year. Without him I'm convinced that man utd would be mid table this season.

My question is, which goalkeeper, from any team and any year, has had the biggest impact on overall league position?

Mr spicy.

Both good keepers but would you say that they were the main reasons for the success? I would say not.

In the examples I have given I believe the teams have been over reliant on the keepers, that was certainly not the case with your two examples.

Again a brilliant keeper but not the reason for the success.

Was Hartson playing for WHU along with Joe cole, Lampard, Ferdinand to name a few that season or was this before then?

I was a WHU fan back then, just around when they invented the Prem.

West Ham used to play in Europe, Inter Toto I think

in Lancashire

no one player is ever the reason a team achieves, over achieves or stays up by the skin of its collective teeth..

yes the keeper will have more of an effect if they are pants or perfect and lucky but without a decent defence no keeper is infallible..

hence there is no I in team..

or number 1..

Have a look at the wiki page for the two seasons:

1990 - Promotion

1991 - Relegation

Frank Mcavennie and Trev Morley got the goals in the promotion year.

Brian Clough would disagree with you, he was very open about saying Shilton was without doubt his most important player and without whom he would not have won the trophies he did. The year United won the treble, would they have done so had Schmeichel not saved the penalty in the semi final against Arsenal? One player doesn't make a good team, but a bad keeper can certainly make a good team average.

Best two keepers I have ever seen are both Schmeicals.

Kasper came to Cardiff when he was a kid from Coventry on loan, he was making star jumps and saving goals, amazing.

Alan Fettis once scored twice in a game for Hull City as there was a injury crisis and he ended up playing as a striker. A few of us in the know heard he was going to start up front and cleaned up at the bookies!!

I put a small bet on Chilivert scoring for paraguay in the WC.

The local Ladbrokes had to ring head office, 1000-1 they gave me.

He took the free kicks for Paraguay and the penalties.

The closest I came was 1st game vs Spain when Zubby zoretta (I do apologise if ol zubby is reading this) just flicked it up and over the bar.

That was the first and last free kick they had close to the opposistion goal.

The reverse can also be true. David James was the reason West Ham got relegated a few years later. They had a good team but he was truly awful that season and cost them many points. They would have been mid table with a half decent keeper.

The worst goalkeeper ever to play for anyone. I've heard so many rumours as to why he was shit but the simple fact is he couldn't catch a ball.

Ivory Coast keeper Barry Copa in Sunday's AFCON final - 0-0 after extra time, Ivory Coast won the penalty shootout 9-8 after Barry saved two and then scored one! He was their sub keeper too

Be a long time before he has to buy himself a drink anywhere in his country, I reckon...
