What's the best way of dealing with these calls that tell you to claim back money and press 5 to find our more or 9 to opt out?

Press the button that opts you out, often its 9.

I think you answered your own question

Personally I'm so fed up with them calling when I'm registered with TPS that I just tell them to fuck off

Pressing 9 tends not to stop them, have had multiple instances of them continuing. Your best off choosing the option that puts you through to an actual human and tell them to take your number from the system.

Press 9 and they or someone like them still rings.

I'm hoping someone will know how we can inconvenience them and make it less worthwhile for their robots to call.

Titz Towers, North Notts

I read a wonderful story about a chap who billed them for wasting his time, took them to the small claims court and won.

MAMOBA, miles and miles of bugger all (Aberdeenshire)

register with the telephone preference service, and re-register with TPS every month or so to ensure you stay on it, and noone has wangled your number out of a data sheet somewhere.

I also get them on my mobile. TPS wise they respond by saying that once upon a time you must have ticked or not ticked a box.

We need to make it uneconomical for them to call and have them employ more real people. But how?

Same here. I haven't given out my landline to anyone, so i know the call isn't for me.

"We need to make it uneconomical for them to call and have them employ more real people. But how?"

They pay a single bulk price for all calls, so it costs them nothing extra to call everyone. If they make 1000 calls and 1 person presses 5 then they are on a winner. Press don't call again number or just hang up. Don't press 9 by habit, if they get a rash of that then they can change the meaning of 9 and you could be agreeing to something.

Do use TPS it won't stop all calls but does reduce them.

bradford

people are getting so many calls from different numbers that are recorded or are just plain sellers numbers

i use who called me on net and check there numbers on there

the amount of people that say tps is crap not worth the time is true

and pressing a button only confirms its a used number to be sold on to another company

so does tps work yes if there based in the uk if not wont make a blind bit of difference

Central

I don't interactive with them as it reveals the phone, often randomly generated, is operational and answered by a human.

Companies sell on lists of verified numbers.

Also report uk companies to the Information Commissioners office, where you feel intruded etc.

It's about time that the UK had a law stating that telephone numbers should only be passed on commercially with the express consent of the account holder. Currently we all have to bend over backwards to take steps to opt out of these lists that are created every time we put our number down on an enquiry, insurance or any other internet/ marketing form. These lists are then sold commercially. It's time thar this was stopped!

(Rant over)

Do absolutely nothing. Just set the handset to one side and leave the line open. It will then clear. Then hang up. I get very few calls now. Not sure if it helps or not. Just be careful by pressing 9. There are scams that use this method.

There's no answer is there? Bt etc should start to realise that them selling calls in dirt cheap bundles will sooner or later mean that more folk will stop having a phone at all. Worst thing is that you have to pay for phone to get broadband.

At least when "microsoft" calls from India you can spend as long as you like talking to a real scammer.

I know but I've never been called back. Also, turn your mobile up full and play them a burst of AC/DC. They don't like that either

I reckon in about two years we will see the scrapping of 'Line Rental'.

Maybe more than two years but it will happen before too long
