Butter, cheese and cream...

are back on the menu. According to sky news this morning, the advice on nutrition given in 1983 was not back up by science and it is apparently ok to eat all the above, albeit in moderation.

How much are you guided by the (ever changing advice) on what to eat and especially on what not to eat?

I am curious if people just have what they fancy or do you listen to the so called experts?

I always look at what my grandparents ate and how they prepared it. They both lived until their late 90's with very few health issues and they are what many would consider to be a shocking diet, lots of butter, fatty pork etc but it was all fresh and virtually nothing came from a packet.

I truly believe it's the crap that's added to many foods that screws people up.

For instance butter should be cream and a little salt, that's it. Have a look at the list of ingredients on some of the healthy options and tell me how they're better for you...

We got one life, lets live it to the most enjoyable we can.

One of my favourite sences is my taste buds, in fact, I like all my sences, but I love food.

The only time I really took notice of what an expert on food said was when I used to suffer from migraines, but on reflection 25 years or so later, I put it down to puberty and not chocolate, cheese and milk.

In total agreement with you on that. We apply that philosophy to life in general, we work just enough to get by and try and enjoy our free time as much as we can eating butter and cheese sandwiches with cream for afters

I must confess I think we have had SO many confusing and contradictory advice given by the government over the past few decades... it made me wonder whether to listen at all. One minute we are told not to have more than two eggs per week, now it is apparently fine to have as many as we like!

My parents and grandparents had a very varied diet which did include butter, cream and proper roasts with fat still attached... and everybody in my family lived to be at least 85....

I wonder whether it is more about the highly processed food that causes the damage.

Think I ll stick to my fruit which grow on the chocolate tree and my wine which has been made from grapes !

Eating healthily is all very well, but do we really want to spend an extra 10 years being abused in an old-peoples home?

Pass the cream cakes, I'll have one just as soon as I've finished this bacon sarnie.

(That said, rather than constantly saying "I'm 97, you know", part of me does want to spend at least part of my old-age freaking out the carers with statements like "I once had an mff, you know")

Mr ddc

Most of science is correlation. They don't actually know for sure something but if there are links then it's a good idea to presume based on that.

True.

MAMOBA, miles and miles of bugger all (Aberdeenshire)

Having lost 17 stone, I eat whatever I want to - in moderation and with exercise in proportion.

I don't eat diet products, I avoid low fat, and i try to avoid processed foods as much as possible. Eat clean and exercise.

I follow research evidence and make my own mind up. I prefer eating butter to artificial margarine.

The old advice was bad but when did government follow evidened based policies?
