Some years ago a yound woman stated "I've just had my IQ tested by Cosmopolitan and if i send them £5 they'll confirm it's 135."

I replied : "And if you send them £25 will they confirm it is 70"

"Uh?"

Even funnier is IQ tests were brought out so the government could sterilise the feeble minded to stop them breeding. Kind of scary anyone would take them really.

I read an interesting article about how IQ tests are irrelevant.

Einstein was a genius. But scored relatively poorly on his IQ test, especially for some one so far head of everyone in terms of intelligence. There was a massive paper published on people that score high on an IQ test are simply good at taking tests.

It was actually a great read

IQ tests were never designed to test 'intelligence', but as we seem to have the urge to measure everything so we can categorise it, it was leapt upon and has become the norm.

Intelligence comes in many forms - not all of them of measurable and so often ignored. Shame really.

Dependant on the type of test, the way its done, etc the score can be ridiculously different.

There are literally dozens of them because the one "standardised" test don't actually work.

Hmm, I guess the validity of an IQ result, like any assessment, will be dependent upon the method of testing. That said they can still be useful tools particularly for identifying other issues. For instance the, rather long, IQ test I was required to take prior to attending one school, highlighted various discrepancies that indicated that I am dyslexic. So the test and its results may or may not be irrelevant, but in my case it was certainly helpful

They tell you at how good a person is at placing things into abstract categories that humans have invented. For example, when asked the question "what is the relationship between a dog and a rabbit?" a higher IQ answer would be that they are both mammals whereas a lower Iq one would be that the dog chases the rabbit.

Both are correct, and I would say that the latter is possibly a more useful answer in the real world.

In theory an IQ test should show a persons ability to identify and resolve an issue. This resuires the test itself to be abstract and not utilise existing knowledge. So the dog and rabit answers of being mammals versus one chasing the other only shows that one individual has different knowledge ratehr than either one having higher or lower IQ.

The way questions are worded makes a difference too. My grandson's had a maths question that asked what is one third(written as a fraction) and two thirds(as a fraction) in tenths. What would your answer have been?

The question was "What is 1/3 in tenths."

It never ceased to amaze me how many times the kids brought home Maths ( well, arithmetic) question sheets where either the Question or the Teachers answer was a load of shite.

IQ tests were based upon flawed research data and interpretation. They measure little of value other than skill taking that test. Result shouldn't change but does with practice.

As others state, intelligence is multi faceted and its qualitative elements are as important as anything that may be quantifiable.

I'd like to be a little quicker sometimes at running things through my head, but I'm never in a race in my life.

Yup, in my understanding they are a test of the ability to use logic to solve a novel problem - and, in their purest form, in a way that does not depend on extant knowledge.

You can test animal IQ and that has nothing to do with use of language or retained trivia!
