Prostate Cancer - ask for a PSA check

Bit of a sore one I know, but I made a promise to raise awareness!

My dad had a routine blood MOT done about five years ago, PSA was slightly raised.

He had biopsy done and turned out there was early cancer there! Had a RP and is now cancer free.

Caught early thanks to blood test!

If your over 45 ask for a check, it could save your life!

exactly the same thing happened to me at 47..i posted a similar thread years ago ..no feedback whatsoever .most guys dont want to think about it or talk about it .there was a guy in hospital with me that was 40 ..its no longer an old mans disease.

so get checked out

psa is chemical that is produced by the prostrate and is an indicator of a problem

rp is the removal of a prostrate..radical prosectomy

your being stupid, its just someone giving out some advice on an issue which lets be honest most blokes ignore..

But the same poster is also telling women that mamograms are dangerous and women should avoid them. Which at best seems somewhat contradictory.

i wasn't aware of other posts by the OP and as far as the meaning of this thread is good in its intent i'm happy with my response..

btw the guy i responded to also posted something less than sensible on sex after birth which is equally of no relevance..

I spent 2 days in hospital last year with suspected kidney stones.

A prostrate check was done automatically and I was told the NHS does this as standard on guys aged 50 and over when in for a number of ailments.

I was all clear; good to know!

my psa was high last year, had a check up with the doc and he put me on meds to reduce my prostate..

being honest i should have sought advice before i did, glad i did so in any case..

us blokes need to be less reluctant to get stuff checked out perhaps..

prostate cancer is easily sorted with a very good chance of a full recovery if caught early ..if u leave it ,it will spread and then your chances arent so good..no brainer really.

I'll reiterate what I said on the mammogram thread. Internet forums are not the place to get Medical advice; your doctor is. This is a complex topic and just asking for a PSA test is not useful. Discussing it with your doctor is.

A Health Technology Assessment concluded that a lack of specificity of the PSA test, a lack of knowledge of the epidemiology and natural history of the disease and a lack of information concerning the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of the treatment of localised cancer, all argue against the institution of a national screening programme.

Although the assessment was conducted in 1997, further work, including a meta-analysis and systematic review in 2010 subsequently concluded that the routine use of PSA with or without digital rectal examination for the screening of prostate cancer was not supported by evidence. The United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) currently recommends against PSA testing as a screening tool for all men in the USA, regardless of age. Further complications arise in the form of the KLK3 gene which encodes PSA. Mutations which lead to abnormally reduced gene expression will result in abnormally low levels of PSA and false negative results. Moreover, research is ongoing to identify prostate cancer markers with better specificity than PSA

Thus the Department of Health have left it to individual patients to decide, AFTER DISCUSSION WITH their doctor, whether to have a PSA test. A booklet has been produced by the Department of Health to assist this discussion.

The patient needs to be apprised of the following points:

Prostate cancer is but one of several causes of a raised PSA test.

Because the test is nonspecific, all patients with a significantly raised PSA should have a prostate biopsy.

Two out of three men with a raised PSA will not have cancer cells in their biopsy.

15% of men with prostate cancer have a normal PSA.

There is no conclusive evidence that detection of early prostate cancer leads to longer survival.

The test cannot distinguish between aggressive and slow-growing cancers and may detect tumours that would not otherwise become evident in the patient's lifetime.

The test is of most value in patients who are 'high-risk' - ie:

Aged above 70 years.

Afro-Caribbeans.

Patients with a positive family history.
