it used to be diesal was cheap to run on your car then the prices went up above petrol

but with the emmissions now included onto your price of fuel and the rd tax diesal has now become as expensive as petrol

diesal was an easy repair as long as you had no turbo on it petrol was dear due to the injectors

now both cars are about equal if you do anything with there engines so its down to choice on which fuel of car to buy and also your tax bracket as well a petrol can run much cheaper nowadays

The difference these days between petrol and diesel is negligible. Only makes a difference really between the older diesel and petrol cars.

More expensive to service diesel? Dont think so,current Astra van just had regular oil n filters over last 100k miles no tune ups,plugs,leads,still runs like when I got it,n usually round 60mpg

Diesel if your driving a lot on m/way or long distance etc

Petrol if your driving thru town / city driving

The Diesel engine has a dpf that gets clogged if your continuously city driving start stopping etc .

it needs to be given a good run other wise it's expensive to get it regenerated or even replaced

As a generalisation, from a well maintained vehicle, couldn't you expect :

a) 170-250,000 miles from a diesel engine

b) upto 100,000 from a petrol engine.

Anyone?

My 03 plate diesel Galaxy has done 230k so far. Still average over 40 to the gallon. Original injectors. Serviced regularly though.

You'd be hard pressed to notice it's a diesel from a sound perspective. Sounds nothing like a tractor.

I drive diesel and get 50-56 mpg compared to 30s in petrol. Overall I save but am a high mileage driver.

Diesels are way more expensive to buy and service but are more economical and are slightly better on longevity.

It really boils down to how many miles you do a year.

Over 20k probably better with diesel under probably better with petrol.

The pros and cons of everything else are down to personal choice.

I ran my 318 to 230k and only fragged it because it wasn't worth the parts needed to get it through the MOT.

Diesel if you're a rep, petrol if you want to drive.

If you're driving over 15k a year then diesel makes the most economical sense.

Modern diesels are much more expensive to service due to certain emissions limiting parts (that actually make the car less economical, efficient and cause greater emissions after a few thousand miles).

If you're just driving a few miles to the shops and back, never going near a motorway or dual carriageway then a small petrol engine is what you'll want.

I actually refine mine but have in the past run on the neat stuff, with some bigger injectors.

Do you let yours down with white spirit at all.
