Do any of you wonderful folk actually do the job you wanted to when you left school ?

Plus as a small note my wife sent a job application off today

In the box for hobbies and interest would you dare put swinging?

Oh and in the sexual orientation box there wasn't a choice for bi

Yes sounds boring but I did, I wanted to be a soldier from the age of 4 and as soon as I left school I joined up.

My only regret was I didn't study for my exams as I'd already signed my papers to enlist.

I didn't have a clue what i wanted to do. Actually got asked if i was depressed because i said i wanted a job that allows me to get up when i want coz i always feel tired if i get up before 9.30am.

I left school at end of 5th year, the job i wanted an inter_iew with needed refered from the same office as the schools career place. So i had to go for an inter_iew with them first to get the inter_iew with the firm i wanted.

It didn't start well when they pulled out my record and told me in a very disapproving voice that i hadn't been seen while still at school.

It got worse when i replied - no, i got lucky and managed to avoid it because it was a total waste of time.

I explained that it was pointless as all they offered was the army or being a kitchen cook. The guy took great offense at this. I told him just to refer me to the other inter_iew. He then said i had to do a full inter_iew with him first to see if there were other jobs available.

So after 20 very very terse minutes of 'inter_iew' guess what he offered - kitchen cook on an oil rig.

I asked him straight if he was taking the piss.

He was even more unimpressed.

Fortunately for me he was unable to block me from the proper inter_iew and i got the job.

What a tosser.

Nope loads of places do a separate confidential form for equal opportunities.. But to me if you are inter_iewing at a place that has to fulfil equal opportunities then surely that is discrimination against the straight white male??

Granted some of these are blatantly obvious. But you still can't ask. Think people would know I'm irish, male and not pregnant but they sure as hell can't ask

I didn't know then and I don't really know now either. I accidentally fell into something I turned out to be really good at....but I don't think I can see myself doing it for the rest of my life!

I'm not sure I had any idea what I really wanted to do. I grew into the job I do now through serendipitous accidents really. Once I knew that this job and the lifestyle it affords me was something I loved, I knew I need look no further.. That said there are a few variations, using the skills I've acquired, that I'd like to explore.

Yes I do. I have regular jobs and freelance. Not rich but happy enough!

Swinging as a hobby? Probably not!

As for sexual orientation, what and who I do outside of work time is my business. If it doesn't affect my ability to do the job, it's not important.

I never paid attention to careers advice at school...in fact had an argument withy careers advisor...asked weather at my age he wanted to be a careers advisor, he said no, I told him his advice was shit then...

No you're not allowed to ask them as part of a job application but big companies sometimes send an anonymous form that you submit separately with that kind of info on it.

Most large organisations will collect this data but it's separated from the application that's shortlisted or assessed for inter_iew so it can't be used in the selection of people. It's for monitoring, so organisations have data on how many of their staff relate to different characteristics. And for most there's usually 'prefer not to say' option.

It's not just for ethnic minorities, it's for women as well.

Google CEOs and Chairmen of the top 100 companies in the UK. Straight, white males will be fine. Don't worry about it;-)

They might struggle a bit on Fabs though!

Yes, always wanted to go in the army and told everyone so, from the age of about 5. i now do a job i never thought i would do. Funnily enough i was pondering on career change last nite, whilst some drugged up lady and her fella sat behind me, entertaining me with tales of what they would do to me, if i told anyone about the pathetic little drug deal i'd been lucky enough to be privy to on their first stop off......at least they payed me at the end of the journey......so it's not all bad

Sorry I am rubbish with finding the right wording, I know it is kept separate but I have read of some companies being told they need to diversify so surely they would then use this info to positively discriminate against the minorities in selecting who to inter_iew? I had to email both it to an agency once together, so can't say they are always separated.

I don't worry about men

they can look after themselves, especially in my industry! (Another bean counter here!)

Ow yes......left school and straight into what I wanted to so 6 years of travelling and doing my passion.....

Then realised I needed to grow up but fell into job of been in ever since and if honest.....I can genuinely say I've never felt like I'm working as still having a blast every day....

I just got lucky......

I had no idea what I wanted to do when I was a teenager but I despised the careers teacher. Fortunately I only ever had to have one meeting with him, I think I embarrassed him when I told him that with tits like mine the best career option for me was to become the next sam fox and get em out for page three
