I used to use a programme called dvd shrink. Removes the encryption / protection etc and did a copy in a few easy steps. Trouble is, not compatible with windows 7. Any recommendations for a reliable replacement?

Not necessarily. It's legal to make backup copies of media you own.

I bought dvdfab. Worked great but now got problems in that it only burns halfway. May have a bad batch of dvds. If i am ripping a dvd with a view to burning again, which format should i use?

sounds more like you have the payed version as only does half way of dvd

if ripping them to avi divx and xvid is usually the best for small files but good quality

the films on net are usually around 700-800mb blue ray ones are around 800mb to 1.4gb
