Footballers, professional?

I know there are a few footy heads on here. I spent most of my life obsessing over football, am I the only here who has started to fall out of love with the game of late?

I barely watch any on the telly, and when I do I find myself cringing at the shit these "professionals" get up to on the pitch. Felt like this for a few years now. Tedious behaviour and blatant cheating over and over, pretending to have been punched in the face etc etc, so on and so on.

I keep telling myself, don't blame the players, footballs governing bodies take no action, ever, and therefore encourage these things to occur. If they introduced harsh bans for diving to win penalties, fall on the floor screaming and holding your face, when in actual fact all the opposing player did was fart in your direction, then I think they could rid the game of cheating quite quickly. But they don't.

Totally with you. It's still the beautiful game in many respects and I still have my season ticket.

However, I also got a rugby union season ticket so I could remember what proper sport was like without all of the showbiz.

Sport for sport and enjoyment's sake with no histrionics, dramas and crazy money.

I do watch quite a lot of football though I admit at times I can take or leave it because of how it can be! But I do now prefer to watch FA Cup football where it's the David v Goliath scenario because you get yo see the blood and thunder of the sport rather than the ballack we can get in the premier! Or maybe even a bit of low league football too

That's exactly it, I feel as though the cheating is encouraged, not just by the players, but the powers that be too, still the most popular sport on the planet even with all the damaging stuff that goes on. Imagine if the game was played honestly, and the players showed some dignity on the field?

I think it's only going to be played fairly once they sort out the wages and transfer capping.

I always remember Roy keene saying he needed more wages as he couldn't support his family the way they were used to on less than 90k a week

I don't get that a year and I still look after my family

The lower you watch, more often than not, the more entertaining it is.

Fucked right off The BBC didnt have any replays on last night but they do have Bolton v Liverpool tonight. Thank fuck for the FA Cup.

The premier league is very over rated, it has 20 teams in, not just 4.

I would reduce the wages by loads but add a massive preformance based bonus, and a panel to sit and watch games and punish people for any stuff that goes un noticed.

Get rid of the 'ref didnt see it so cant act on it' bollocks.

Always a football fan, but now very much find the money involved quite vulgar.

The latest thing that has crept in is this mid season tiredness, cos they're having to play too many games. Raheem Stirling given a week off, which involved a game that week, so he could go and recuperate in the Caribbean, cos he was fatigued.....

That was an easy 100k that week, bless, the following week he had to put in 12 hours training and 90 minutes on the Saturday....

And it's not an anti Liverpool thread, he's just one example.

How would they fare in a proper job?

I like the performance based bonus idea, would be a good incentive to the players who don't always put in 100%. But I have never really been against the money they earn, they kinda deserve it for all the shit they have to put up with, constantly hounded by the press, opposing fans, etc

A poorly paid premier player at the bottom end will get 20k a week.

A highly paid player will get 250k.

How you you even justify 20k for a run of the mill player or 17 year old just breaking into the first team?

The business will implode eventually with increased wage demands from greedy players and agents. People working hard for 15k a year will smell the coffee one day and stop buying their season ticket and the merchandise.

If I could make myself financially secure by the time I'm 25 I'd do the same. However greed has taken over. There are agents getting £1m bonuses for one off deals? Is that ok too?

Mate very very few footballers in the league are getting 250k a week no more then 5 , your right football is an overpaid sport but it is just like any other sport most are Overpaid some baseballers get paid more then a lot Of 'high paid footballers' and don't get me started on basketball. There are a lot of footballers who are only making 300 quid a week man I think the majority are, premier league footballers will obviously be paid a lot as 50'000+ a week come out to watch them plus millions more on TV, not saying it is right but it's just how the cookie crumbles....

I reckon there's five at city, three at utd and five at Chelsea with around 20-30 on 100-150@ week and 50-70 on 50 a week.

Give or take and that's wages before tax not including freebies or sponsorship

I've seen the money side of the game at the very highest level, and it is corrupt, no other word for it. Most of the senior figures in the game are hopelessly out of their depth, most of the owners are in it for ego and self promotion and most of the players are grossly overpaid relative to their ability.

I fell out of love with the economics of the game many years ago, but still love the game in its purest form with a passion. It is why I focus on coaching and kids football and those who play for the love rather than the money.

The outcome?

FIFA earn a fine of £70,000, West Ham continue as they are and the victim, Bristol City get fuck all.

how many know 20 mins into there first home game manc united will take more gate money than any second division club for a whole season of 23 home games

Yeah they do, Cardiff were giving homes in The Vale and Tenerife about 8 years ago, Gary Croft got one when he signed. Cardiff were league two at the time.

Prem players now get homes on Palm Island in Dubai or where ever it is.

What? Don't understand what you are on about.

Messi and Ronaldo get paid because they play football at the highest levels, the record books establish this.

You or my hubby couldn't do this fact, no matter how hard you trained.

The same for people like Usain Bolt. Or does he not have a special talent.

And yes the market does dictate the price paid. that is why JC Owens and Pele never earned the kind of money that the same sort of professionals do today because the market was different then. They still has comparable skills but the market didn't exist in the same capacity then.

So why is it bullshit, it is just external market forces that's all. I am not suggesting that the market will always be as high as this, although it may go higher, but people are commodities just the same as property and gold, and therefore their values can rise and fall dependant on certain factors, bullshit not being one of those.
