They use disposable plastic speculums these days

Phone ahead and see if they'll put it in the fridge for you

Doesn't do it for me. I accidentally forced a speculum out last time when she went over the other side of the room to get something.

Like them or not ladies, please do not skip them. I lost my darling sister to cervical cancer 18 years ago.

I expect I'll be getting that letter in the post at some point this year seeing as I shall be 25 before the end of it

I can't imagine it will bother me too much, I've had 2 kids and a coil fitted - just another routine set of cold hands up there

Dreadful to think that a lady can have two children yet not had a smear test, nhs guidelines have a lot to answer for!

I was only 18 when I had my first round of treatment for pre cancerous cells, it was picked up on my first smear at age 17. I was one of the lucky ones. My gp at that time ignored nhs guidelines and insisted that of you were sexually active you had to have them done.

Fast forward to age 35 and this time I had a third of my cervix removed due to stage one cancer.

In my opinion, the insistence on early smears when I was a teenager probably raised my awareness and saved my life
