Stephen Fry

Has just rocketed to the top of my "3 celebs you'd like to take to the pub"

His answer to Gay Byrne's inter_iew question about God is just awesome (and just happens to sit with my beliefs).

The other two are Eddie Izzard and Brian Blessed.

So two questions - what do you think of Stephen Fry's answer and who would you take to the pub?

This is Mr Fry at his best. The guy is without doubt a leader of men and women and with his brand of common sense attitude to life he would make a fine prime minister.

Hi VV. Yes, the bi-polar depression he lives with. So often a feature of life that with brilliance like his, there's something to struggle with. Same with Sellers, Spike, Kenneth Williams, Hancock, Robin Williams, Ruby Wax... love them all and make me laugh but it breaks my heart that they lived / live with this.

That's how bipolar is. Two extremes. You're right, a lot of bipolar people are brilliant, creative people. The lows go hand in hand with the highs.

At least there are treatments. It is possible to manage, much of the time, if not completely.

I'm not up his arse at all. I admire and respect the man.

Do you consider yourself up the arse of everyone you like, admire and respect?

It's not possible to think he's a brilliant man without being up his arse? What rot.

He's had a fair bit to contend with in his life and he's made a success of it anyway.

He doesn't believe in God, true, but if he met him, which was the situation he was asked about, then he would have been wrong.

He was saying what he would say *if* it turned out he was wrong and met God, which is what he was asked.

He's not said, or even suggested, he believes in God, so no contradiction.

Had he answered, "I don't believe in God", it would:

a) not have answered the question asked.

c) not have been nearly as entertaining.

actually, FWIW - Dawkins was top of the tree 20 years ago, at least.

his writing then was more focused around the mind, cognitive science. though i couldnt swear when he actually wrote those papers.

I really liked Stephen Fry's answer and he'd probably be great in the House of Lords, to balance all the Bishops etc that influence our laws, such as the mitochondrial DNA vote that was passed in the Commons yesterday. We shouldn't really have religion influencing our laws anymore.

He'd be a great pub friend, as would Debbie Harry, Julian Clary and Clare Short - a bit of a mix. Would have loved to have spent time with Tony Benn, one of my heroes.

Stephen fry is not intelligent he has a good memory

Marriage is faith based. For u recognise love by mans actions. Mans action to show evidence of God is rejected when man jumps happy like in a church.

U can not doubt one and believe the other else u can not believe science

God did not give children cancer evolution did and I don't see Dr Hawkins or Stephen fry cursing evolution...

If God does not exist evolution acted on its own

Clearly some athieests are not very good at reasoning.

He is no more anti Islam than he is anti any other religion or, more importantly, fanatical sect thereof.

I like the chap and the speech he gave in the debate about the Catholic Church was compelling.

Although I certainly don't agree with all he says he is always well reasoned and witty. He seems to possess enough knowledge about any subject to give a 3 dimensional aspect to any argument he makes. Brilliant bloke. "

.

Yeah that's what he says but I'm afraid him and Dawkins are certainly more critical of Islam although yes they disagree with all religions.

I belive both are members of the humane society! Dawkins I think is a president or ex president.

I follow Fry's twitter feed and agree completely with his stance on Islam.

His wittiness is due to the fact that he read what others have said and used it as his own reasons.

For when he was questioned about the 10 commandments and why they were wrong. The essence of God, he stood up like a child and left. For all his knowledge , eloquence he was left silenced.

I find that amusing. Would Dr Dawkins mock his daughter for believing in God for he mocks those he does

Somewhere in North Norfolk

"I found his answer contradicted his own belief , why so much anger towards a creator he don't even believe in . Go on then Send me to the gallows !

He doesn't believe in God, true, but if he met him, which was the situation he was asked about, then he would have been wrong.

He was saying what he would say *if* it turned out he was wrong and met God, which is what he was asked.

He's not said, or even suggested, he believes in God, so no contradiction.

Had he answered, "I don't believe in God", it would:

a) not have answered the question asked.

b) have seemed a bit abrupt and he'd have been further accused of being conceited and pompous.

c) not have been nearly as entertaining.

Well said, it seems some people only listened to the answer and not the question. This is why some people on your thread are not understanding just how well Stephen Fry accounted himself.

Ironic.for that second he believed in God to question him is what faith is all about..."

No, he imagined he believed in God. Some humans have the capacity to use imagination to consider theoretical concepts. They don't need to believe in the concepts to do that.

I can imagine I'm a school headmistress or a doctor if I want. It doesn't mean I believe, even for a second that I am one.

What's wrong with mocking the ridiculous?.

People mock Scientologists and Mormon... They even mock ufo abductees and conspiracy theorists.

If you choose to believe in something that had no proof or tangible benefit, then you have to be prepared to be mocked.
