Who was the first person to really break your heart (when you finally understood the meaning of a broken heart) and why?

I have never had my heart broken, I am still with my first love and he will never hurt me - unless I ask him to

I've never really had my heart broken, but have, in my mid-forties, the most powerful, all-consuming case of unrequited love I've ever experienced.

I don't for a minute claim it's as bad as having a broken heart, but it's seriously hard in its own right.

Thing is with broken hearts you can either let them affect your life or pick yourself up and dust yourself down and move on

The breakdown of my marriage has been really painful and affected me quite badly, although I have hidden it well for the kids sake. I am fine most of the time but have times/days when I do feel like my heart is breaking. It isn't a nice feeling but it get's easier with time xx

My ex. I was broken hearted when I first left, but realised as timewent on that it wasn't a healthy relationship nor a true representation of a loving one.

Once. Couldn't hold food down for a week. I was at college when it happened. Stood outside my class and I got the worst text I could have gotten from this guy. I've been married and divorced since then, and nothing hurt more than that text.

A guy I met in a bar, fell for him in a big way, we spent so much time together and got on so well. Then one day he rang and asked to meet me and told me that the girl he split with just before we met was pregnant with his baby and that he felt he should be with her and the baby. We had only been together 3 months and I was devastated.

They split up again before the baby was even born, he's since had 4 more kids all with different people. Every time a relationship goes tits up he texts me to say hi. Lol. I'm much wiser to it all now. He's a player. We are friends but that's it.

Had my heart broken twice and as much as I don't want to admit it , I've done it to someone ( not as blunt as it sounds ) .

Me when I was 17. Was madly in love and one day I just got the text!

The other was with my ex . Instead of growing some balls and sorting it out , we used to argue day in day out . Worked hard and long hours to give her everything . She lapped the money , but not me working . Had a bust up and she told me to just leave . I did and it was the hardest thing I had to do . Walking away from a house , wife , and 2 lovely kids . Instead of talking it through we just went at each other . Things were said , a few of my things damaged and then it was too late to sort out . Dealing with a broken marriage is hard , but a broken heart from losing your children never fixes . Some may think I deserve it , and I think I do . 5 years later and I still feel it every day . I see my children every other day and have them every other weekend .

I don't think a real broken heart does repair , but then maybe mine is in a different way .

Just my 2 pence worth .

Some girl at school. We are still friends now and see each other regularly but it hurt back then. She'll often apologise , I think she thinks it really affected me. I sulked for about a week then climed back on the horse.

I'm only aware of breaking one guys heart and he will periodical text me going on about it. It was the guy I was seeing before jay, I never loved him but he did me.

We had a row and went to go home and I said if you go and don't talk it through you don't come back, so it was his own fault

I thought my ex husband leaving me 10 years ago broke my heart, but then when my dog died last year I realised what a broken heart felt like. I don't think anyone is capable of breaking it like that ever again.

Just once a couple of years ago. I was in a vulnerable place. He kept telling me that we would work as a couple and I believed him. Months later I found out, on face ache, he had moved in with his best mate's wife. How dumb was I? Never again.

I've only allowed it to happen once. I knew it was coming. Think it's good to experience all of what life has to offer - even the horrible bits.

I've been in relationships and sometimes I have been hurt when they have ended. However, I've had my heart shattered into a million pieces 6 years ago, when I discovered my childs mother was advertising for intimate encounters on PlentyOfFish, we had been together 7 years and I was crushed. I hadn't slept with anyone else in almost 8 years.

Losing my son pretty much destroyed me, broken heart doesn't come close to describing that. There have been several failed relationships but I am too stubborn/resiliant to let it effect me like that.

My first ex 9 years ago when she dumped me and cheated on me with a man twice her age.

I've had my heart broken many times after that but they weren't as bad as the first time but it still hurt

No man has ever broken my heart because I have never been in love so have never cared about anyone to be bothered

when my grandad passed away. Horrible grief and heartbreak.

Been gutted over relationship break ups and upset, but nothing comes close to what I felt for my grandad.

Goodness knows what it's like to lose a child, some brave people on here, I know I wouldn't cope.
