Wouldn't put me off, I can understand why people do it.

The negativity I don't like is whinging or self pity, both are manipulative and trying to get pity meets always puts me right off someone.

we made ours as short and simple as we could thinking that it would be easier for people to understand

Its great to have likes and dislikes and to have a preference with regards to who you share your personal space with. But there are some that would be a lot shorter if they said what they do want rather than don't want. Unfortunately I'm ruled out on most do lists as I seem to be a short arse on here.

We didn't start off with 'donts' on our profile but it became clear that the option was op them on our profile or spend a time replying to each message thats clearly not a fit, or ignore messages(which am not keen on)... So we put them on there.

We tried for a sensible balance, and don't mind them on profiles as long as its not all 'donts'

I have tried to get a balance on mine. I have done the ranty stuff when I get horrid messages for days in a row then I go back and re word. Now I hope it is a balanced delightful read about how wonderful and amazing I am.... Or that it just says I am pretty down to earth. Either fine by me! I do totally understand how it would put people off but I can also totally understand how it ends up like that!

After reading so many and also getting serious rants via messages about veri's, my way or the highway, etc - I made a point of NOT putting anything on there other than a few things I like.

If someone likes what they read and see they are welcome to ask me anything without getting a tirade of abuse.

My thinking is, a ranty negative shouty profile is more likely to put off some of the confident men with a bit of self-respect that I'd like to meet, than to deter the one line chancers who don't read it anyway. So I'd be shooting myself in the foot.

Those that have nothing tells me that the cant be bothered putting the effort in and to me suggests they are just on for a quick fix instead of actually enjoying the lifestyle.

First half of my profile is my list of dont's but I like to think I communicate them in a non ranty, non demanding sort of way (and I add a coupla jokes too). I agree a profile in SHOUTY CAPS is off putting but it can be another filter...

Anyone brave enough or arsed enough to read beyond my list of dont's will hopefully see that I'm a fairly reasonable sort of lunatic and to be honest, the profile has worked for me for the last 4 years or so

I'm sure that it's more annoying to read message after message of unwanted nonsense from idiots, but the long screeds of text that read like a lecture from the headmaster/mistress are off-putting.

Yes. This site is supposed to be about fun. Too much negativity in a profile just puts a damper on the whole thing.

It's not so bad if it's a single sentence just mentioning things that they won't do (I have such a sentence on mine), but when it's a string of Do's, Don'ts and exact requirements, I just move on to the next profile.

The only thing it may do, is put off the folk who fit your criteria and think sod this, what a moody shit this is! I'm off to find someone pleasant sounding.

We find negativity really unappealing and wouldn't want any of it on our profile, nor play with others who have!

Theres a sentence regarding single guys on our profile which we hope is an example of stating our position in a positive way for example xx

It may put off some, but I've never seen someone with that type of profile starting a "why can't I get a meet" thread. If a profile puts me off for whatever reason then we're not compatible...job done!

No one can message me anyway so my profile isn't meant to invite people to message, it's more for people I do message for them to read it and see what it is I'm looking for so they can decide if they want to respond to my message.

First impressions can make it a turn off but sometimes the negatives come from the fact that they've had bad experiences on this site or elsewhere. I've found that 99% of the people I've met or messaged are well mannered however their profile reads.

- and i felt if i met them they would fire this all at me and then sit back and say right then now lets hear about you - whereas i like to think if you read ours you feel you could come into the lounge - have a hug and sit and natter over a coffee

Other people know their target market would be put off by a negative ranty profile so write theirs accordingly. It's got nothing to so with wanting loads of messages or an ego massage.

My general test is "does this make me sound like a cunt". If it's really negative and ranty, I wouldn't want to message that person so I wouldn't expect the men I want to meet do either.

I think my verifications speak for themselves. I may have a slightly negative profile but it is only in response to the messages I receive and in the hope that some will read it and not message.

Yeah I agree it does put you off and like other guys have mentioned there is little point in going any further. Its a shame as some of us do have a brain (and personality) that resides outside of our lower regions and I guess it would be nice for more people (both sexes) to be more positive and not so harsh. After all we all have feelings and rejection is a tough one to deal with...well for most people anyhow.

The original question by the OP was to ask if negative profiles put people off.

Answer is yes.

If the negative profile writers are happy about that is a different question.

Some say yes, some say no depending on your preference for false negatives (putting off nice people) or false positives (not putting people off and deleting more messages)

Why does it have to be a competition to see whose opinion or preference is the most correct.

And additional sly little digs is just a tiny bit pathetic. What is it you're trying to win so badly that you'd make yourself look stupid?

It's about getting the balance right, one or two lines tell me nothing but if it's too long I'm not going to through it all and try and work out what they are after.We have kept ours about right (ppersonal opinion only).
