How would you deal with the situation , if on a meet the other person begins to go low or cycle ?

Coming from a perspective of zero knowledge about such conditions ?

Stop the meet.

If its a social, say thank you and walk away. If its play, then similar.

leave, say thanks but I need to go do something. if its a friend then by all means help, but a casual meet I would walk away.

I wouldn't KNOWINGLY meet someone who is Bi-Polar.

It's highly unlikely someone is going to flip out on a meet, but it's not a risk I'd knowingly take.

BECAUSE...

If she DID flip out and screams the "R" word...I'm (just like any guy) is in deep shit.

I'm not going to take the risk of fucking my life up over a shag.

good question, as you know there are many forms of bi polar, some may cycle only once or twice a year, this rarely comes on suddenly but start to go up or down over a period of time.

I'm a rapid cycler to be diagnosed as a rapid cycler you need to experience four or more episodes in a year. Unfortunately for me I can have days where I constantly cycle from hour to hour and then maybe go a week with no cycle.

From my personal experience your more likely to notice when I'm high rather than low, if I went low mid meet the outward signs would probably be me going very quiet and distant.

Today I've suffered badly with panic attacks but that is something different and you don't have to have bi polar to have panic attacks.

I used to have a sticker on my front door at eye level, if I ever needed medical assistance like an ambulance it was like a green SOS kind of thing and they would know instantly where all my details where kept which was a plastic tube kept in the fridge.

Also I'm supposed to wear my SOS bracket but I tend to only wear that if I'm going somewhere strange.

Anyway, unless someone is a rapid cycler I don't think you would see any great change in a matter of a couple of hours.

Nice to see all the mental health education hasn't gone to waste and that all people with bi polar are going to flip out, get violent or shout rape and judging by all the threads we've had on the subject and the amount of people on the forums that admit to suffering you've probably already met a leper whoops sorry someone with bi polar.

anyone can just flip out, you don't have to be bi polar, there are all sorts of mental illness's.

But I don't think someone is going to go from being perfectly calm to violent that quickly and if they where that unstable to be a danger to someone else they would probably be in a unit anyway

I couldn't have said it better myself.

If anyone doesn't want to meet me because I'm bipolar - though I'm the one likely to know if I'm not well and they're in no position to decide - that's up to them. Anyone can decline for any reason, after all.

The last thing I want, or will arrange, when my mood is dropping is a meet but if people want to think I'm dangerous then that's their choice.

They are more likely to notice when I'm elated but that can actually make me more positive, energetic and fun to be around anyway.

There are plenty more who will meet me. So, there you go people, go and update your private notes on my profile to read "Dangerous bipolar nutter, run for the hills!"

You can't catch it, you know.

And bipolar people are far more likely to be a risk only to themselves than to anyone else.

In most cases you could meet someone bipolar - possibly have - and you wouldn't have a clue.

It's not really helpful that people asking questions and wanting to know more about a condition they're not educated about are having their heads bitten off.

I feel like curiosity and asking questions should be encouraged, that's how people become more educated about mental health issues generally and the stigma attached to them can be challenged.

It's nobody else's business that I'm bipolar. I've shared it on here because I choose to. I feel in no way obligated to tell meets.

I'd tell someone I might get involved in a relationship with before things became too serious, but meets? Not a chance. It's not relevant and it's nothing to do with them.

Could I ask the OP what made him ask such a specific question?

Sad to see such generic, knee jerk and uneducated responses to this thread. Thankfully the balanced, considered responses from those who actually have experience of bi polar have brought some humanity and insight to the conversation.

Would you equally want those suffering with epilepsy, diabetes, PMS, migraines, caffeine withdrawal, those who don't like mornings to inform you incase they also have a "moment" in your company?

so what is the answer..... if you are in the company of a total stranger, you start to feel unwell: do you want them to stay with you, can you gauge how long you would be feeling unwell, would staying cause any embaressment to both parties.

is there really right or wrong answer as it will be different in every situation, leaving with dignity and appropriateness is okay in my book.

and that is what I would do.

now if I knew them better and classed them more than a stranger, now that MAY be different

She may not have had a condition, it could have been a reaction to something else entirely. She may have been undiagnosed. She may have just had her meds changed and had no idea there might be a problem. She may never have had an episode before.

I doubt if she knew there was a serious risk of such an episode that she'd have arranged a meet.

"How would you deal with the situation , if on a meet the other person begins to go low or cycle

If you're uncomfortable, for any reason, mental health related or not, end the meet, nicely, and leave.

If the person needs medical attention or is a risk to themself call an ambulance or the appropriate emergency service. It might be nice to stay until help arrives but that's your call.

is there really right or wrong answer as it will be different in every situation, leaving with dignity and appropriateness is okay in my book.

and that is what I would do.

now if I knew them better and classed them more than a stranger, now that MAY be different"

I can only answer this from my perspective, as you know my illness is pretty severe, it is very rarely I am out with just complete strangers, usually I have points of contact, but if I was I understand my illness and what would be the best thing to do at that time which I really can't answer as different things would work depending on how I was feeling.

I don't think it's unreasonable, whoever you met, should have given you the heads up. Asked if you were comfortable with it, and inform you on how the condition affects them as an individual.

She may not have had a condition, it could have been a reaction to something else entirely. She may have been undiagnosed. She may have just had her meds changed and had no idea there might be a problem. She may never have had an episode before.

I doubt if she knew there was a serious risk of such an episode that she'd have arranged a meet."

"It's not really helpful that people asking questions and wanting to know more about a condition they're not educated about are having their heads bitten off.

I feel like curiosity and asking questions should be encouraged, that's how people become more educated about mental health issues generally and the stigma attached to them can be challenged."

this..

on a thread about this particular where there have been some very honest posts by those who have this condition its inevitable that others will be curious..

slapping people down who are genuinely curious doesn't serve to get the message out there that we all need to be more aware ..

"Nice to see all the mental health education hasn't gone to waste and that all people with bi polar are going to flip out, get violent or shout rape and judging by all the threads we've had on the subject and the amount of people on the forums that admit to suffering you've probably already met a leper whoops sorry someone with bi polar.

So, there you go people, go and update your private notes on my profile to read "Dangerous bipolar nutter, run for the hills!""

Hear hear! Im undiagnosed bipolar and i no my moods and can recognize if im heading for a low. The last thing i want then is to get out of my bed let alown leave the house.

Plus i no how difficult it can be for other people to deal with so i wouldn't put other people thro on of my lows xxx

I'm not offended, though I am a bit hurt by the suggestion I might make false rape accusations.

I'll survive though. Worse things have been said to me. I've been sacked for being depressed. I've had a job offer withdrawn because I'd been treated for depression in the past. I hadn't even been diagnosed as bipolar for either of those two events.

Someone, with whom there's a mutual disinterest in meeting, saying I might make false allegations is hardly the end of the world.

Misconceptions or offensive opinions should be challenged. But people shouldn't be shot down for asking questions.

It might all seem obvious to you if you suffer from bi-polar, because you live with it everyday. Others don't, and if they want to understand more about it I think that should be encouraged.

Me Paul is bipolar and not in the slightest violent but I know plenty of people who after several pints on a night out are very violent,as someone who rarely drink's as I'm aware it has a affect on my mental health it's amazing watching some people on a night out as the drink starts to affect them. When I was on as a single guy has some of my best meet's while in a manic cycle as you are more fun and out going and it's one of the most scarest things about being bipolar as you enjoy the elated feeling's opposed to being a fairly quite persons and struggling to deal with depression, well I've rambled on enough

My eldest sister, some 40 odd years ago now was diagnosed as schizophrenic. Through the years the true meaning of schizophrenic has been argued by mental health professionals, and so apparently conditions such as manic depression and bipolar were added.

My sisters condition was managed perfectly well with drugs for some 30 years allowing her to lead a perfectly normal life.

Over time she slowly developed immunity and or bad reaction to all of the drugs that are currently available.

Nowadays, and for the last ten years or so she's had to live with it in an untreated state.

As such she has short periods of normality. However she can switch into psychotic episodes at any instant in time. In this state she is potentially dangerous, a risk to herself and others but not in the physical sense and so falls short of the requirements for compulsory secure hospitalisation.

Acute paranoia and hallucinations create fantasy claims of robberies, physical attacks, and sexual abuse, during childhood at the hands of family members and in adulthood at the hands of her doctors. Some of the fantasy robberies has resulted in her neighbours having their houses searched by the police and the stress of inter_iews by the police.

Fortunately there are systems in place that allow the exchange of information between the police and the mental health department such that the police can better manage such individuals.

To sum up, while the drugs were effective no one would ever have known she had any issues whatsoever. Without the drugs, while she is in a 'normal' state, no one would know she has any issues whatsoever. However than can change in an instant, leading to a full psychotic episode that may last for weeks or months at a time. Even then, an unsuspecting person with little or no experience with people with the condition would not notice anything until the shit hits the fan and they find themselves being accused of causing her an offence of some description which is typically her claiming theft and or sexual abuse/assault. She is currently officially diagnosed as being bipolar and suffering from clinical depression.

That's just one example of what I dare say is a fairly acute case.

In the event that a guy went to her house for a shag there may be a risk that after the event she might claim she was raped and or robbed by the guy but that risk exists with anyone!

My dad was bipolar and one of my very best female friends has the condition.

Two of the funniest, kindest, most sensitive, loving, intelligent, caring humans you could possibly hope to meet.

Those equating bipolarity with risk of violence might do well to head into their local town/city centre right now and look at the behaviour of the (mainly non-bipolar) people out and about.

If I had the choice of any woman on here and the one I picked told me she was bipolar, it wouldn't change my decision.

I think you have a lot more chance of people changing mood more quickly if they have a personality disorder rather than bipolar.

In no way should this affect you meeting people though as the same could occur with physical conditions such as epilepsy diabetes etc

As someone who is uneducated about bipolar I am reading this thread in the hope of learning something.

So far I gather that most people diagnosed bipolar will know what “stage” they are in and how best to cope with their situation.

I then read

“If the person needs medical attention or is a risk to themself call an ambulance or the appropriate emergency service. It might be nice to stay until help arrives but that's your call.”

Are there instances when such emergency help is required or is it a situation as with most epileptic episodes that the sufferer would rather an ambulance was not called as they will recover shortly (often before an ambulance could arrive)? Feeling they would rather not have to explain to the crew why they did not want to go into hospital.

Sometimes when people are in the downward phase of bipolar then they may self harm or perhaps do worse. In this instance the best thing to do would be A&E (unless they are regular self harmer in which case they probably wouldn't need it) If in doubt always A&E better taking them to a safe place where items to hurt themselves with are restricted.

I've read a lot of this, nearly all of this forum post. I won't quote some of the things I've read, I do genuinely believe that alot of people write words without truly understand the power of what they are saying.

I suffer bi polar and have done most of my life. Do I need to disclose this to anyone at all? I don't feel I do, bi polar is a label trying to define an illness but the one size clearly does not fit all.

If you actually _iew the symptoms and remove the label you can get a clear picture of the person someone wants to avoid (as what I believe some are trying to convey here, the so called crazies), two people who have been labelled bi polar are not the same thing, they may share symptoms of course. It's the same as a cold and flu, they are different and share symptoms but they are not the same thing despite the idiot who things they are.

One thing that has been offensive to read and it's what got my back up too, some people on here seem to think bi polar=crazy. I think that's truly unfair but ignorance like that exists everywhere and im not bashing anyone, reading that should be a good prompt for a rethink to those people.

I live a normal life, raise my child cause no harm to anyone and have kept a job since I was 16 with no gaps but im bi polar. I just don't see why a shag needs to know whether I'm bi polar or not, I'm no harm and in fact I'd say it makes me sensitive and thoughtful to a person other then myself, I tend to feel a lot of empathy.

And this goes in normal life, you know I go for a job and I have to declare it, if I do I don't get the job if I don't im with holding information the company could use against me. Attitudes don't seem to change in the outside fabswingers world and it's not ignorance it's because the term bi polar with crazy. The shit think is it only labels symptoms together and doesn't in my eyes help things, it's a stick to be beaten with and to have to fess up to and self deprecate like we somehow have less worth

"As someone who is uneducated about bipolar I am reading this thread in the hope of learning something.

"

It's as with most things - not an exact science.

Common sense/compassion.

Keep in mind ANY one of us can be affected at any time, be it through knowing a sufferer or suffering ourselves

How would you know on a meet that someone was on a low / high / rinse cycle? You need to really know someone to realise that the behavior is not normal for that person.

Just my thoughts here but, when bipolar was known as manic depression, there seemed to be much less hype and less misunderstanding. Now we're labelled as bipolar (yes, I am bipolar myself) some people think we're crazy.

Bipolar covers a huge array of symptoms and, as has been pointed out, no two people with the condition are the same - their symptoms and treatment will be totally different.

To the OP: As someone said, it's your call, but PLEASE don't be scared. A&E is probably your best bet, but there are also 24/7 mental health charities with crisis lines. Anyone can call them for advice, even 'regular' human beings Two that spring to mind are Rethink Mental Illness and Mind, but there are more.

It's rare that I would ever challenge anyone on a forum (I hate confrontation) but, to the person who brought up false allegations of rape - disgusting thought to have let alone say! Oh, and just my thoughts on this: you can be raped when you suffer with a mental illness, not all us crazies scream it for fun! That's not to say it doesn't happen, but you're just as likely to hear it from average Joanne Bloggs as you are from a person with mental health issues.

I shall step down now

"How would you deal with the situation , if on a meet the other person begins to go low or cycle ?

Coming from a perspective of zero knowledge about such conditions ?"

We just would not consider having sex with a half gay white bear

Well said. Some of the things are very offensive what have been said. Even if people don't realise it, the written word can be a blunt tool to tarnish with and if you're trying to convey a point or message I'd say use the words very pin point else it's not going to be understood what you mean, on an emotive subject sadly it's more likely to be taken wrong then the chances of someone having a bi polar swing from hyper mania to extreme low on a meet.

It's a stigma people are actually battling on top of an illness. I do applaud people that have been balanced on this one.
