Hereabouts

Got an MRI on my knee tomorrow. I had some form of brain scan a few years ago, but I don't remember which type of scan it was.

Anyway so I'm kinda claustrophobic. Will they stick me in head first or feet first? Is it noisy? How long does it usually help?

I'm in full on freak out mode at the moment.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Ask all the questions you have before you go in so your mind is at rest. No such thing as a stupid question.

Well they stuck my head in a cage so I couldn't move it, yes it is noisy and your supposed to be in for about 20 minutes but the last one I had was an hour, oh and when you've got your head in the machine and can't see anything they decide to rip the canular in your arm out taking half the bloody skin with it.

But mine was for my brain I guess yours will be different

I had headphones put on last time I had one - local radio - steps came on.

I'd have preferred the loud banging!

Yes it's noisy. You'll also have to lay absolutely still or the images will be useless.

I can't remember if I went in head first or feet first. It was ok though. I have no particular memories of it and certainly nothing traumatic.

Just your legs will go in! When i had mine i was in for two hours :/ depends how thorough it is! Its noisy as hell but the one i went to put headphones with music on! You have to lie as still as possible tbh i think in the end i fell asleep during mine after the first 30mins

Steps are amazing though

When I had my brain scan I was shaking uncontrollably and ended up being in there for almost 3 hours. I didn't feel scared but I couldn't stop shaking.

Talk to them about it first. They might be able to give you something to help if it's going to be difficult. They'd probably prefer to know beforehand than find out part way through and have mucked up scans.

It's noisy and the room is enclosed but your head is not. I got told to stay very still which instantly made me want to move

they do however weight down your appropriate leg, or did for me. It lasts a while but you almost lose sense of time. It was a while ago but I seem to remember being offered headphones for radio but could be wrong.

there is no known long term side effects of an MRI scan ( just a banging head ache cos they so damn noisy! ) I have em very regular n have for the past few years ... Not radiation just magnetic fields n radio waves

I can swing my arms, propel myself forwards and then try not to fall on my face. My leg keeps buckling. I'm usually ok because I just put my weight through my arms when my knee fails to work properly but if it buckles while I'm trying to hobble I'll go arse over tit

I may have to ask them for help. I can hobble about 2 steps without needing to grab onto anything haha! I'm dreading it. So nervous I can't sleep. 12 hours til my appointment

I've had an MRI on my knee recently and was only in up to just above the waist. Yes it's noisy but they gave me ear defenders and mine was one of the fancy blue sky scanners so it looked like I was looking through a glass ceiling to blue sky and trees so spent my time counting the leaves on the trees

Mine took just short of an hour and the knee was strapped into a cage like thing. It's nothing to worry about I promised out and I was asking all the same questions as you before I went and then some!! I'm on crutches too and it was fine going in on them then they just move them out of the way. I was mostly worried I'd have to take off my bra because it was underwired but I went in fully clothed!!

Yeah really don't understand why they took them off you. My crutches were just put to one side. I went in fully dressed so metal on my jeans zipper, button etc, under wired bra is metal the bloody scanners itself is metal!! They were clearly just taking the piss

I had the base of my spine done,my face was slightly covered and I had a little sweaty moment at the start. Once the machine kicks in you concentrate on what is happening and trying to keep still. I had a heavy pad put on me to keep me still. You can get a tranquiliser from your doctor if you need it

MRI is nothing to worry about , I've had about 20 over the last couple of years and also had brain surgery as well because of an avm on the brain which bled and caused brain damage to my right frontal lobe . I go in head first I hate the noise but the nurses are always amazing God bless them . you are given a button to press in case you panic and they will come and support you all you need should you need it . it does make me feel a bit fuzzy afterwards but that's probably because of my titanium strip on my head . they will give you ear plugs, with it being your knee you may have to ask for them . if you would like to know any more please feel free to message and truly there is nothing to fear if you can do swinging you can easily do an MRI

OP I had one locally for the same thing at RS. They only put your legs in and provide ear defenders, music, panic button and lots of support. They take bursts of scans so be prepared to be in there for half an hour or so. They keep talking to you. I had take breaks because the knee was very painful in the position they needed it to be to stay still. Don't forget to remove all metal!

I'll be taking pain relief before I have it done again. Lesson learnt.
