Turns out, Sam Smith's "Stay With Me" sounds oddly similar to Petty's "I Won't Back Down," and Smith will now have to pay him royalties for the song.

In an out of court settlement, he has to pay a 12.5 percent writing credit was given to Petty and singer-composer Jeff Lynne. The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers now lists Smith, Petty, Lynne and Jimmy Napes as chief songwriters of the song.

Quite right too.

Is it as blatant as Marc Boaln's T Rex's "I Love To Boogie" being a rip-off of this song by Webb Pierce :

Spot any similarity?

It's a small victory but the similarities are there, good that artists have protection

Never heard of Sam Smith but fair enough. When is Noel Gallagher going to be ordered to pay royalties for all the songs he's ripped of.
