Fraud!

Scotland - Aberdeen

Thank you to the Bank of Scotland, they have just phoned me to see if they have just intercepted an instance of fraud, which would have cost me £417.90.

I am very careful about using my card details online etc so just wanted to say, I am so grateful they have teams like this in place.

I asked how did they notice this was possible fraud and they said, it was an unusual IP address used compared to my usual purchases.

So, I'm away to run a scan on my laptop despite having malware installed, if any techie guys can recommend any other steps I should take, I would be grateful hearing you.

Any money that is defrauded from your account you can claim back anyhow! But yes it's great when they manage to stop it

I know, but it's better that it doesn't happen in the first place than waiting to notice then try and claim back

Yes it (cardfraud) costs them a fortune so they have pretty sophisticated technology to alertbthem these days.

A friend of the family works for a top bank, he's involved in anti fraud, he developes their online structure, and even he won't do online banking, tells us not to aswell.

It's good when it works. I play a facebook game and spend money on it, but it took my bank 6 months to realise this and to stop texting me about suspect activity

I'm with Santander and they're great too. Someone in America tried to take £3.98 from my account, probably a test for a larger amount.

They called my mobile and work number repeatedly until they got me, within 20 mins of it happening.

Irritatingly it meant a new card being issued, and various things not getting paid for a few months because they were linked to that card!

Yeap! My card has now been cancelled and I will have to wait 5 working days for a new one!

In the same bloody week I am heading down to Birmingham for a social, so now I will have to go into town and take out cash over the counter (with ID) and guess how much cash I may need! Typical! But then I'd rather that than having the money taken in the first instance.

Chances are the card details were captured offline and then used online.

Most banks have highly sophisticated neural nets that spot anything out of the ordinary. It's easier (and cheaper!) to block anything suspicious than chase a refund after a customer complains.

Computers make waaaaay less mistakes than humans!

North of The Wall - youll need your vest

They once called me about a suspicious payment for computer stuff whilst I was waiting at the cash desk for the goods to be brought from the storeroom. Good to know they are monitoring it.

Downside is when they keep blocking my card for trying to use it at ATMs overseas, even when Ive phoned them in advance to tell them where and when Im travelling - its a different department apparently - but its left me struggling a few times

My bank issues cards in branch these days - a tad quicker!

As for the foam party? Just smile sweetly and I'm sure a few drinks appear!

Agree with Obi, unlikely to be of been captured online. However if you have concerns only ever use reputable companies etc for online shopping / payments.

As my lovely mum always says " If in doubt , do nowt "

I have two bank accounts one of which is just for on line purchases. I only transfer money into this account to cover any on line transactions and it's empty the rest of the time.

Like others have said, I always get a text if any transactions are made from abroad.

I got this on my barclaycard the other week. The reason was high volume of purchases online in a short period of time...but it turned out they were all me

It's always a tad embarrassing when they run through the list and you say "yes - lovehoney, Ann summers and kinkyshitdotcom were all me!"

if you suspect your computer as being at fault for the capture of your credit card details then looking for a virus or other stuff installed is silly really best case wipe it clean and start again

i would really be looking at where you used your card last in a month time or even 2 months back

restaurant, shopping even at a cash machine as your card could have been cloned

as goes for online details it does make me wonder how they got your 3 digits on the back of the card as they would need this to complete the transaction on your card and without it they cant do much

have you made a telephone purchase somewhere ?

Wish Barclays had stopped a transaction at Xmas time for me, I thought it'd be nice to do my Christmas food shop in waitrose and the woman on the till put an extra 0 on the end of what should have been £87.63 she put £870.63 and I tapped my pin in not realising. Went to toys R us 3 days later, then smiths toy store then when in the absolutely massive queue for pandora and I mean massive cos they had barriers outside for people to queue my bastard card got declined and was pretty bloody embarrassing!! Wasn't till I checked my banking app that I'd seen what happened in waitrose. Had to drive from there to my bank to give them a bank statement before they would refund me cos they wouldn't accept looking at the banking app and I couldn't find my receipt. They finally decided to refund my £700 odd quid but had to wait 5 days for it to go in my bank and that fucked up my Xmas shopping. When I asked Barclays they said that it wasn't unusual activity on my account, I'm sorry but I've never spent 800 odd quid on a food shop.

Just off the phone to the bank to confirm the other phone call was legit and it was!

The guy was really helpful and due to all malware being in place and up to date, the most likelihood was ATM tampering!

So not sure how to get round that one but hey, you live and learn!

And Obi? I might just take you up on that drink offer

I'm confused!

How can " the woman on the till put an extra 0 on the end of what should have been £87.63 she put £870.63" ??

Waitrose - like every other supermarket - scans barcodes and the checkout staff hit total. There's no option to randomly adjust a total?
