What's so special about then?

For my normal brew, I drink instant. If I am in the need for some "posh coffee", I get out the cafetiere.

But I drink a shitload of coffee a day

They seem a very expensive way to have a cuppa if you ask me, some of the machines are over £100 then your paying around £4 or £5 for a box of 12 pods, I can get a jar of kenko for that and it will last me a month plus no fancy machine required

You have to compare like with like. You cannot compare the costs of a pod machine with an Argos value kettle and a jar of Asda own brand instant coffee.

You have to compare the cost of a domestic machine that uses freshly grown coffee, just like the ones that have in coffee shops, but on a smaller scale with the pod machines.

Either you want proper coffee or you want instant. You cannot make an espresso from instant and in Italy, they would never serve you instant coffee.

You will then find that the machines cost about the same and using the pods works out about 2 or 3p more expensive that fresh coffee, but there is no mess to clean up and no bin full of coffee grounds.

They're nice for a treat. Although I got my machine on a lightening deal last year for £35 and the pods are usually 3 boxes £10 in my local supermarket. I'd use the hot chocolate one's quite a lot in the morning for on my way to work, but it still works out not too expensive

My daughter bought me one for Christmas one year. Used it for a while but £5 for 12 pods, the cappuccino only has eight is expensive, so it's just another gadget cluttering my worktop.

I find they have saved me some money on what used to be a daily Starbucks habit en route to work - the price of one box of capsules gives me 8 drinks for my £3 - something!

It does work out cheaper if like you and I who has a daily coffee from a coffee shop

Will stick with my Gaggia Classic thank you.

Real ground coffee, freshly drawn and anyway I choose to drink it.

Until you've sat there on a beautiful morning with the smell of the hot machine, a Cortado Condensada in your hand and tunes in your ears

I wont buy a pod machine that's so expensive it would be cheaper to have pipes plumbed directly from costs or Starbucks. I've used keurig machines alot in hotels and its good. But not worth the cost per cup over standard filter makers.

I read the manufacturers follow the same business model as printer makers to shovel easy cash their way once sold, hence they're putting blocks to prevent coffee pods working that aren't their own in them. Rip off - if I paid for the machine its mine to do as I wish with.

Is little more than a spoonful of coffee per pod really worth what they want to charge.

High quality coffee does not have to be expensive. Get it whole bean and grind/blend to taste.

In my day job, have visited a coffee factory, where they do the full processing from green bean to either instant granules or filter coffee.The only difference between the super market own brand and the **** branded product was the label on the jar. If you want a filter coffee brew without the gritty taste that a cafetiere leaves, try the Aeropress. Very manual system, but makes amazing espresso.

Nespresso Pixie...

Amazing piece of engineering and very good at what it does.A wee bit expensive initially but we'll worth it.

My espresso works out at 29p ...brilliant value and on a par with Costa if not better.Highly recommended.

Buy a decent German machine if you must.

Put in any beans, and it will grind them, then make the coffee.

It's like Printers, they almost give the printer away, and rip you off on consumables.

Use your kettle.

If you know where to look on a certain Internet auction site you can get compatible pods which can be refilled with your own ground beans to reduce costs.. although I don't know what you do with the milk ones!!

one interesting fact with the coffee machines came up the other day, I was reading about how you can't clean out the water system,

you can end up with a slime coating the pipes and the inside of the water container

this slime can over time harbour all sorts of nasties that are not killed by the hot water and flushed into your coffee

You can clean them but with H&S fashion ones it's very difficult

The beauty of a proper style one is that everything the coffee shops do - you can at home.
