I'm off to Lisbon for a few days next week.

Anyone been? Any recommendations for things to do, places to eat, good bars / clubs (not swinging clubs I'm going with a non swinging friend lol)

Central

I love Lisbon and have spent weeks there. The older districts such as Bairro Alto are great to meander around. Cheapish restaurants, with prix fixe options help you control spending are typical.

The bus from the airport to downtown is cheap and takes about 30 mins, better than a cab for value. They leave every few mins.

There are a few different train stations and - I think - its the orient, east one, that goes to Sintra. That's are a couple of beautiful beach towns about half an hour out that are really worth a half day trip to and cheap on the train.

Watch for pick pockets, especially on trams and crowded tourist spots.

Enjoy their cafes, with great coffee and custard pastries that are to die for.

The botanical gardens are worth a trip. Take the funicular tram up the steep incline to get up towards it.

The castle has great views and you can get the tram up, not sure if its a 12 or 28, or walk. It's a hilly city, so take frequent rests. I remember the gorgeous scent of citrus trees wafting over the castle walls in winter at the castle.

Winter weather is mixed, having spent winter there, but its milder than here, sometimes rainy.

Loads to do but the best experience is to hang out. Great to see washed clothes hung out drying still, in a capital city.

It's my fave European capital.

Lisbon is like San Francisco. It even has trams. And the underground is very efficient too

Agreed, I really liked Bairro Alto. From here and east up to the castle there are loads of little windy streets with hidden, family run restaurants and bars.

They are miles cheaper and nicer that the obvious touristy drags. It can be a bit intimidating going native but it's well worth it for the improved food and experience.

Get your walking boots on and go for it. I found walking the best way to get around although it is bloody hilly!
