How open minded do you consider yourself,in that I mean how open to discussion and having your viewpoints tested are you? Are you prepared to concede and/or change your opinion?

I try to always consider other viewpoints but know I can be either stubborn or firm on mine depending how strongly I feel about the subject.

Always interested to see how people present their cases/arguments.

That's where the real fun/skill is and very few are willing to do it, as it usually involves doing some research, rather than relying on your own, often long held, beliefs.

It is actually very, very difficult to be "open minded" as it goes very essence of human nature. We exist in a bubble in which our world feels comfortable and it becomes a natural defensive measure to challenge anyone or anything that threatens the world that we exist in.

There is a well known theory about how we as humans will use generalisation, exageration and deletion when supporting or fighting off a challenge to our comfort zone.

This is the reason that debates get so heated and is the reason that elections are won and lost as a consequence of only a very small number of people. Most people hold entrenched views and will stubbornly hold on to them at all costs.

I realize that I'm fairly rigid on some topics but am open to influence on everything. I've met some who appear challenged, such that a topic or idea being challenged is like having their very selves challenged.

I try to keep my opinions and beliefs separate to who I am, as they are not me per se. I don't over identify with anything, my race, nationality etc. It could be argued that over-identification is what causes many of our global issues, such as religious conflicts and war. I don't go there.

An issue with forums is that space is limited and being concise can make posts more like punchy attacks though.

Agreed-i think peopIe who can do this well are very clever. I myself find doing it very difficult however it's a very good way to widen your understanding,as well as determine how flexible your own viewpoint is.

I like to play devil's advocate sometimes purely not for the fun of it - but because there is - more often than not - more than 1 view that is 'right'.

It's often only the loudest/the wordsmiths that are heard.

Doesn't mean they're right.

I think I'm a LOT more open now than I've ever been.

I'm looking for very specific things/fun now rather than the Broad-scope "Generic"...

There is an art to an argument which has nothing to do with the loudest. The wordsmith element is there for sure, but there's more to it than that. Knowing your stuff is half of it, but spotting the bollocks is a big part.

The real fun is when you can discuss a topic and get to the real core of the matter, dispensing with the various "sixth form debating point scoring" (aka politics) bits.

We take great pleasure in picking up on the many flawed techniques that you hear so much (ad hominem, ad populam, straw man, etc etc.) as they are often very subtly wrapped up.

We are the mad people who actually invite in the Jehovas and Mormons for a good discussion, thus saving the rest of you from their visitations for another day

We usually have them begging to escape after a few hours. Our tally so far is causing two a suspected heart attack, and at least one to agnosticism and another to atheism. All over a nice cup of tea.

...like I said...sometimes only the loudest are heard. That's why, when they're not being challenged - I like to (if I'm sufficiently bothered) play devil's advocate and throw a differing opinion/point of view into the mix...

I have changed my opinions on some things, after all evidence can change over time.

I'm fairly open minded, i think most people can't debate though, they just like to give their opinion and that's it. We've become a nation of opinion givers because we've got the freedom and more resources available to us to do that. The media often spouts opinions without evidence, or by biasing evidence and missing out important things. Really hate that. Even my local news will report something factual and then give a summary on who and how they came to that conclusion, so why can't the bigger news outlets?
