False memories

Hereabouts

When I was little and going abroad, I used to draw pictures on the plane for the pilot... I was quite young so i don't remember exactly, but I'm pretty sure they used to let me give it to the pilot in person.

I know from experience that we can create memories that we completely believe are real, and can't see the events happening any other way. (I'm still convinced I jumped from the top of the stairs in my old house to the bottom in one leap, which is impossible, but that's exactly how I remember it).

So I have two questions.

1) was there ever a time when children were allowed to visit the pilot, or am I making this up?

2) do you have any false memories?

1. Yes and sit in the jump seat.

2. No.

1. I definitely don't know.

2. I'm not able to say, as I wouldn't know if its false. So I would err on the "no" side. But I hat could change. I need s lie down now.

1. Definitely

2. I was taken to the races at Ascot as a 4 year old. To this day I am convinced there was a race on the roof of the grandstand where the horses jumped off, a drop of about 40 meters, and carried on to the finishing post.

Random but seems like a real memory

Well, I don't know about what happened on planes, but I do know that I have more than one very clear false memories.... Some created to hide bad things that happened to me, but some that I just can't explain...

One that haunts me is of standing on the end of a wooden jetty, on a lake, aged about 12 and wearing a sundress, and talking to an old fisherman in a rowingboat... But I've been told that it never happened and, try as I can, I can't find the lake...

Back in the old days, children on the flight could ask to go up to the cockpit, when the plane was in flight and see the pilot. One memorable year ( I was 8 or 9 yrs old) I got to be in the cockpit when the plane took off , and my brother was in it for the landing..... ( I have checked with parents, didn't dream it) It sounds mental now, but you have to remember that this was pre 9/11 and before everything went "health & safety"

It's all in my head. I'm not really laying in bed reading the forums on my phone, I'm actually strapped to a bed in a white padded room humming to myself!

I have a strange haunting dream, too. I had just rowed back from a fishing trip and came across a child wearing a sundress ....

A friend of mine has a psychology degree and she claims that most memories adults have from before they were 5 are false memories.

I have a lot of memories from that period of time. I find it very difficult to believe they are false memories. But I guess I'll never know!

Under the age of 3 seems more likely. I don't have a degree but I did study psychology. Most memories before that age are likely to be remembered through photos or stories, and may be true but you might not actually remember the event, just what people told you. However, saying that, I'd imagine particularly traumatic experiences may either be remembered or have false memories created to repress the traumatic ones. However it's just my opinion, im not an expert

My Sister used to do some awful bullying to me behind closed doors when I was young, including some psychological bullying.

To this day she still denies it and claims that I imagined it/am making it up, and she GENUINELY seems to believe that.

So am I making it up or has she completely wiped it from her memory?

People were allowed into cockpits until a few years ago in large planes.

We probably all have 'false' memories, though all memories that we have are comprised of the same elements- visual, sounds, emotions, smells and tastes, as well as a possible time-based context: you know if it was last week, a moment ago or years ago etc. An imagined experience will contain the same elements and so there's little to no qualitative difference between them all.

Each time we access a memory we actually reformulate it. So the original memory is changed in some way. Our memories often become degraded over time too.

Memories also often get compounded together, so that similar experiences get joined together. Is such a combined memory a 'false' memory, if elements of several things gets mingled together?

I'm a bit of an expert on memory, and encourage you to not expect for memories to be just like a film that was produced at the time of the event and then kept intact, pristine condition, unchanged over time.

I broke my arm when I was about 6 or 7 and again 2 weeks after it was out of the first plaster. I have no memory of either time it happened. I only know because my parents told me about it and I've seen pictures of my arm in plaster

She is probably feeling too ashamed to remember it. My dad was horrible to me growing up right into my late teenage years and he denys ever sending me under the stairs or hitting me.

I have several, though I'm sure some are caused by reoccurring dreams, which Dosnt suprise me as my dreams are all ways lucid.

I'm sure I have been to the place on the coast, that the channel 4 logo is made out of. I remember playing there, but no clue if it's real or even exists.

Another is crawling under the sides of a church marquee and drinking pop as a kid, but can't be true as I was born in a city.

When I was in school in Ireland I used to fly Dublin/Liverpool/Dublin at Christmas and Easter...

I used to always be asked if I wanted to visit the cockpit and have an air steward sit with me till I was about 14 (because I was flying alone).

We lived in a house till I was 3 so this memory was before that, I got up in the night and fell down the stairs, when I got up I went and sat under a gate legged table until my mother came down, I can remember her giving me a square on chocolate for some reason.

When I told them I could remember that thinking at least part of it would be made up , it was all totally true and they couldn't believe it
