A very great man once said....

No one is born hating another person because of the colour of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than hate.

The Dungeon

We don't have free speech in this country and we never have. The yanks do, the 1st Amendment and that gives them the right to say whatever they want, when they want ... however, just because you have the right to have something to say doesn't mean you have the right to be listened to does it? We are equally free to ignore you, not buy your product, not watch your programme, not listen to your broadcast, not employ you, not read your paper etc

However, we do have 'hate speech' in this country which is against the law. From wikipedia:

"Hate speech is, outside the law, speech that attacks a person or group on the basis of attributes such as gender, ethnic origin, religion, race, disability, or sexual orientation.

In law, hate speech is any speech, gesture or conduct, writing, or display which is forbidden because it may incite violence or prejudicial action against or by a protected individual or group, or because it disparages or intimidates a protected individual or group."

So basically, you can't actually not allowed to offend anyone anymore because you're technically breaking the law. Another way of viewing it is as thus; you only want to listen to something you like to hear and everything else offends you so it must be banned. Well I'm offended by the Tory Manifesto so can I have it banned as hate speech please? No? Oh well, such is the double headed sword of free speech.

For me, just because someone is racist, homophobic, anti-semitic, islamaphobic, anti-christian, whatever, means nothing. Just because they spout their shite doesn't mean I have to listen to it does it? (Personally, I turn off the Conservative Party Political Broadcast so I don't have to listen to their brand of hatred!) Doesn't matter what you say or what you ban, there will ALWAYS be people who listen, believe, follow and support such hatred. When someone is openly full of such rubbish you can use reasoned argument to counter their hatred, if they don't/won't listen then banning their opinions won't make them change their minds, it only strengthens that opinion and makes them feel hate even more.

Ban everything or ban nothing, those are your only choices.

Freedom of speech has been debated on here before. Freedom of speech comes with the duty and responsibility to use it wisely.

The principle of the right to offend (i.e. to mock someone's beliefs for example) does not extend necessarily to the right to insult. Or to espouse hate.

The pope quote was actually 'if my friend insulted my mother he should expect a punch' (good old Mail!).

The Sine case is interesting as at the time Sarkozy's son was rumoured to be converting to Judaism in advance of marriage but the cartoon was withdrawn and Sine dismissed by the publisher (who went on to become head of France's state broadcaster).

Your free to take the piss out of Judaism just as much as you are Christianity or islamism.

Your not free to incite racial hatred of any!.

There's a difference between ridiculing someone's faith or prophet and inciting people to chop the heads of Jews!.

I am not racist, sexist or any other kind of 'ist', it is pointless to be so. I will however continue to voice my opinions about the absurdities that religion, race and cultural rules impose on people. That is my interpretation of free speech, and the right to free speech should be available to all. I will not incite hatred of people just on their beliefs or skin colour. But should they decide to do so, I will argue my case and, if required, fight back.

Religion has too much protection, including tax breaks, which means I have to pay more tax as a result.

It's morally wrong to insult and hurt others intentionally, but most religious should get over themselves and accept that their mythical beliefs have no more founding than fairy tales.

Religions should be open to intelligent debate and pay appropriate tax now, so the rest of us can pay less.

Lets put this in perspective. Jews do not carry out terrorist acts in Europe nor do they attack innocent people.

Moslems do not carry out such acts either although some people hide behind the banner of Islam and do so.

Whatever we may think. Rather than say what we can do with our free speech. There will always be some who violentlyattack what they see as the Jewish enemy, while the Jewish community will not carry out violent acts against Islamic interests.

And before anyone raises the point, Israel is not the Jewish community and the Jewish community is not Israel.Israel may be a bit of a maverick state but this is not the Jewish community.

Away from fabs (or on it, if you like lengthy discourse) I discuss my beliefs with others. Free speech, for me at least, extends as far as attacking ones beliefs and having my own attacked. You can debate and criticise ideas all you like. When it's not ok is when the ad hominem attacks begin and a person attacks the person rather than the belief, that's not cool. Attack the belief, not the person. I think it's perfectly ok to mock anyone you like - Jesus, Muhammad, Yahweh, Thor, FSM (lol) etc. You're criticising ideas and books, not skin colour and people. Those who cry foul when you denounce or mock any religion or religious idea are the enemies of free speech imo.
