A Wine Whine

Somewhere in North Norfolk

I don't know if this will amuse any of you, but it amused me.

A couple of days ago I was in Tesco, waiting to speak to a member of staff on the customer service desk.

At the desk, ahead of me in the queue, was a woman in the front of house uniform of another large, local retailer.

The woman delved into a carrier bag and produced two empty wine bottles; one red and one white, both of the same brand. She also produced a receipt.

She informed the assistant that she'd bought the wine the day before because it had been on 2 for £8 but that once home she noticed the discount hadn't been applied.

The assistant spent a few minutes investigating and found the discount was active but applies only to the purchase of two bottles of red or two bottles of white, not one of each. She explained this to the customer and pointed out that although both sections have the 2 for £8 advertised, it doesn't say it is mix and match.

By now the queue is up to four people and there's only one member of staff on the desk.

The customer then spent ten minutes telling the member of staff that their wine offers _always_ allow mixing of wines within a brand so this one should too.

The assistant was very patient and calm and kept replying there was nothing she could do because the offer didn't apply to the items purchased.

Cue the customer once again repeating that their offers always...blah blah blah.

Eventually she got fed up and left, extremely pissed off.

I was slightly stunned that anyone would bring back wine they've already d*unk and want an offer applied. But customer services seemed happy to do that, if the offer was valid.

On finding that the offer didn't apply and it was her mistake, and particularly having already d*unk the wine, I was gobsmacked that she continued to insist the offer should apply to her purchase and she should get a refund.

Is it just me that finds this rather ridiculous and slightly unbelievable?

Don't see why she brought back the bottles, empty or otherwise. All she needed was the receipt to show no discount had been applied. As it was she was simply being an arse trying the if I make enough fuss you'll give me what I want ruse.

Nope. Pretty much why we don't shop at Tesco. Deliberately complicated offers designed to confuse busy shoppers into thinking they're getting a bargain, when in fact they're being ripped off.

In addition, imho, Tesco is worst for having a different price on the shelf than is charged at the till. But you should always check your receipt before you leave the store.

Of course it would be nice to be rich enough to be able to sneer at people watching their budget, and feeling they've been conned, but presumably we are talking about £s here, not pence, and as granny used to say, look after the pennies...

Or even 'every little helps'!

(I'm also not allowed in Lidl on my own, as I've never managed to grasp the concept of the prices being above the item!)

Maybe their senior management team and the board should consider that people have now become wise to this and are now shopping elsewhere as a result.

Tesco are having some serious problems at the moment.

No company is ever too big to fail
